Richardson takes worlds 100 title

Sha’Carri Richardson stood late Monday night in Budapest, Hungary, a few meters beyond where she had just blazed through the finish line of the women’s 100-meter final at the world championsh­ips.

The 23-year-old American had appeared to already know she won as she crossed the line, pumping her arms. But it seemingly did not set in until she saw the scoreboard, with a championsh­ip-record 10.65 seconds next to her name. ShellyAnn Fraser-Pryce, 36, entered the final as a sprinting legend. She earned bronze, in 10.77 seconds. Her Jamaican teammate, Shericka Jackson, was the favorite, but settled for silver, in 10.72. — Andrew Greif

Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams of USC, Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and Michigan back Blake Corum are among the returning first-team players who were selected to the Associated Press preseason All-America team. Also, USC junior Calen Bullock, a two-year starter at safety was named to the second team. The Muir High graduate has seven intercepti­ons and 87 tackles at USC.

Iowa State football player Jirehl Brock, who was charged in the state investigat­ion into illegal sports wagering by ISU and Iowa athletes, left the program, the school confirmed. Brock, the Cyclones' leading rusher last season, was among five projected football starters since Aug. 1 to be charged with tampering with records for allegedly attempting to disguise his identity on a mobile sports betting account . ... Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh will serve a threegame suspension to start this season as part of selfimpose­d penalties for NCAA recruiting infraction­s. The suspension will take Harbaugh off the sideline for the Wolverines' home games against East Carolina, Nevada-Las Vegas and Bowling Green. He will be permitted to coach the team during the week, as per NCAA rules.

Luis Rubiales, the leader of Spain’s soccer federation, marred the country’s Women’s World Cup victory after kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the medal ceremony, drawing criticism for inappropri­ate conduct in a sport that has struggled to overcome sexism. Rubiales and the federation sought to downplay the incident through a statement it attributed to the player he kissed, then later released a video in which Rubiales apologized.

TJ Jablonski gave up one run and struck out five in 5 1⁄3 innings to lead Needville, Texas to a 3-1 victory over El Segundo in the U.S. bracket of the Little League World Series in Williamspo­rt, Pa. El Segundo falls into the loser’s bracket and plays today against Smithfield, R.I. in an eliminatio­n game.

Goaltender Jonathan Bernier, 35, who won a Stanley Cup with the Kings as a backup in 2012, retired after playing more than a decade in the NHL, a career that spanned six teams.
