LOS GATOS >> A 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a woman and vandalizing a vehicle at a pro-trump rally in Los Gatos on Jan. 6, police said.

More than a dozen people attended the event at Town Park Plaza, which started at 1 p.m. and was “largely peaceful,” the Los Gatos-monte Sereno Police Department said in a news release.

Around 3:25 p.m., the man drove into the area and got into a verbal confrontation with a person he believed to be a supporter of the president. Police said the man kicked the person’s vehicle as they tried to drive away, causing “significant damage.”

The man returned to his vehicle and apparently used a “slingshot-type weapon” to fire projectiles at a group of Trump supporters, said police, adding that no one was hit.

Police said the man drove closer to the group, got out and assaulted a 60-year-old woman. Bystanders intervened and officers arrived moments later to take him into custody. Footage obtained by NBC Bay Area showed the man being pinned and punched on the ground.

The woman suffered “substantial injuries,” police said.

Police said the man, identified as George Tretyakov, was booked into Santa Clara County jail for two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of felony vandalism. He was being held without bail Jan. 6, according to jail records.

Violence also followed a “Stop the Steal” protest in Los Gatos on Jan. 2. Some of the protesters and another small group were involved in a physical confrontation at North Santa Cruz Avenue and Greys Lane. On Tuesday, police said they were investigating reports of “anti-asian insults” made before, during and after the incident.

“We welcome differences of opinion and will work to ensure everyone’s rights to free speech,” police said in a Facebook post. “However, we do not condone and will not tolerate violence, intimidation, and racist hate speech. Hate in any form is not welcome.”
