Unfortunately, COVID-19 has limited the teams of eager volunteers that normally show up for National Rebuilding Day in April. However, the need has never been greater!

Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley

(RTSV) is an incredibly dedicated and hard-working non-profit that helps low-income homeowners with life-changing repairs and improvements that allow them to stay safely in their homes. RTSV has been serving Santa Clara County for 30 years!

Normally Rebuilding Day consists of 30+ teams performing work on as many homes and other worthy non-profit facilities. This year, many of the Corporate Teams and longtime volunteer groups were unable to join due to liability issues surrounding coronavirus restrictions.

So, the Board of RTSV decided to come together and raise a brush (or several) to help out an immensely deserving 84-year-old who has called California her home for over 40 years. “Not only am I looking forward to seeing my fellow boards members after more than a year, I am truly excited to able to get back out in the community to give back and help someone who needs a helping hand” said Rebecca Jepsen, Board Member RTSV.

After moving to California from Vietnam, Lien married her husband who served in the U.S. Army, and together they raised one daughter who now lives in southern California. Her husband died 20 years ago, and she has been doing the best she can to take care of their home and property. In the past several years she has been severely limited by arthritis as to what she can do. Like so many, due to COVID-19 she has not been able to visit her daughter and two grandsons, relying heavily on friends and neighbors for groceries and getting to and from doctors’ visits.

RTSV has already replaced her furnace, repaired damaged drywall and siding, and updated her smoke and CO detectors. This coming Rebuilding Day, the RTSV board will wrap up the repair list by adding a fresh coat of exterior paint to preserve and brighten up her home.

The Board of Directors team will be among 250 volunteers working on 12 project sites throughout Santa Clara County on April 17th and 24th. All sites will follow strict COVID-19 safety protocols. Again, the goal of these Rebuilding Days is to provide low-income homeowners, most of whom are seniors and disabled, with much needed repairs — preserving safe and affordable housing. In a year that has taught us much about ourselves, we are all too familiar with the importance of a safe place to call home.

“We are so grateful for those who’ve stepped forward this spring and look forward to getting ‘back-tonormal’ for our upcoming Rebuilding Day this fall,” says Executive Director, Deanne Everton. If you would like to sponsor a project, join a team in the future, or make a donation to keep this great work going, go to www.rtsv.org.

Over the last 30 years Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley has performed over 50,000 life-changing repairs with the help of 40,000 volunteers at over more than 4,500 homes and non-profits throughout Santa Clara County.
