Join the effort to support housing affordability

-

We can agree we have an affordability crisis with housing in Loveland. Teachers, firefighters and essential workers can’t afford to live in Loveland.

Attempting to provide pragmatic solutions, the Loveland Affordable Housing Taskforce brought together a broad range of individuals from non-profit groups, local experts, city employees, financial institutions, builders and developers.

As an affordable home builder and member of that taskforce, I can tell you it has been a rewarding experience to see individuals with strong and differing opinions work together to come up with solutions. By listening to each other, these solutions are better than any individual’s original idea (not something we see much of in our country currently). A prime example of solutions offered are the changes to the Unified Development Code (UDC) put in place last year to incentivize developers and builders to develop a variety of housing types, including affordable housing options. After debate and consensus building, city staff members worked tirelessly to incorporate the taskforce affordability concepts into UDC changes. Both the Planning Commission and City Council embraced the changes and passed them with strong majorities. These UDC changes have proven successful since several builders and developers are now proposing new Loveland projects that include affordable options.

The taskforce is continuing its work and will be offering more pragmatic solutions in the future. But, we need your help. Small groups of vocal people are against smart growth that will bring needed housing choices for Loveland’s different working families. The City Council needs to hear that Lovelanders support efforts to solve this affordable housing crisis. Please add your name to the Loveland Affordable Housing Taskforce letter at www.lovelandafforablehousingtaskforce.com (Google Chrome works best).

We can solve this housing affordability crisis if we work together. Please be a part of the solution.
