Beavers overcome first half mistakes to win 40-20 over Cardinals

On the road against their arch rivals, the Glen Rose Beavers had to overcome a rough first half but came out victorious over the Haskell Harmony Grove Cardinals Friday.

Despite the Beavers having four fumbles in the first half, the Beavers topped the Cardinals 40-20 to go 2-1 on the season. Next week the Beavers head out on the road again to open conference play against the Jessievill­e Lions (1-2 overall). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Glen Rose Beavers scored first to take an early lead. Glen Rose’s Noah Wright scored on a 60 yard punt return at the 9:45 mark to put the Beavers up 7-0. The Cardinals then came back with a 65 yard touchdown at the 9:33 mark. The Cardinals’ PAT was no good as they trailed 7-6. The Cardinals came back in the second quarter to take the lead after a 2 yard touchdown run at the 11:57 mark. Their two point attempt was good as they took the lead 14-7. The Beavers were able to score just before the half when quarterbac­k Wesley Launius scored on an 18 yard touchdown with just seconds left. The Beavers PAT was no good and they trailed 14-13 at the half.

The Beavers came back in the second half. In the third, Ethan Taylor ran for a 10 yard touchdown to put the Beavers up. The Beavers converted the 2-point attempt and took the lead 21-14. Launius then came back with a 27 yard pass to Wright. The PAT was no good but put the Beavers up 27-14. Before the end of the third Wright scored on a 2 yard run to give the Beavers the lead 33-14. The Cardinals score one last time with 6:01 left in the fourth but missed the PAT to trail 33-20. Wright scored one more time for the Beavers before the end of the game on a 5 yard run to put the Beavers up 40-20 against the Cardinals.

For the game, Launius completed 3 passes on 13 attempts for 42 yards. He was also the leading rusher with 13 rushes for 113 yards. Catching the ball was Jace Cheatham with two catches for 21 yards and Wright with one catch for 27 yards. Rushing was Dalton Taylor with 8 carries for 45 yards, E. Taylor with 31 rushes for 7 yards, and Wright with 3 rushes for 52 yards.
