Jr. Cubs and Lady Cubs hit the court in Hot Springs

It was a four game night as the Malvern 8th and 9th grade Cubs and Lady Cubs basketball teams traveled to Hot Springs Tuesday to take on the Jr. Trojans and Lady Trojans.

The Jr. Trojans and Lady Trojans were able to sweep Malvern to give each team a loss to open the 2020-2021 season. In 8th grade action, the Lady Cubs fell to the Lady Trojans 22-13. The 8th grade Cubs lost to the the Trojans 38-3. For the 9th grade Lady Cubs, the Lady Trojans’ defense held strong to get the win 42-14 and in the 9th grade Cubs game, the Trojans came back from a halftime deficit to get the win 51-25.

8th Grade Lady Cubs 13, Jr. Lady Trojans 22

The 8th grade Lady Cubs kept it close with the Jr. Lady Trojans in the first half of Tuesday’s game. The Lady Cubs scored the opening points after both teams were held scoreless in the opening three minutes of play. The Lady Trojans quickly tied the game and then took the lead,3-2, after making a free throw with 1:10 left in the first quarter.

In the second, the Lady Cubs retied the game at 3-3 with 4:19 left to play. Both teams were then held scoreless until the 57 second mark when the Lady Trojans were able to make a basket. The Lady Trojans scored once more right before the buzzer to go into halftime with the lead 7-3.

Three-pointer by the Lady Trojans in the second half hurt the Lady Cubs chances of making a comeback. The Lady Cubs had cut the Lady Trojans’ lead to two points in the third quarter, but a made three-pointer put the Lady Trojans up by five going into the fourth. The Lady Trojans then hit two more three-pointers in the fourth to cap off a 10-point run down to the 1:50 mark of the fourth. The Lady Cubs were able to make two baskets before the end of the game to fall 22-13.

8th Grade Cubs 3, Jr. Trojans 38

The Jr. Trojans were too much for the 8th grade Cubs Tuesday. The Cubs were held scoreless through three quarters before hitting a three-pointer in the fourth to avoid a shutout. The Trojans were able to take the lead early going up 19-0 over the Cubs in the first quarter. With a running clock, the Trojans only managed one point in the second quarter to lead 20-0 at halftime. The Trojans added another 10 points in the third to lead 30-0 going into the fourth. It was at the 3:30 mark of the fourth that the Cubs made their lone basket of the game. The Trojans added eight points in the final quarter to win 38-3.

9th Grade Lady Cubs 14, Jr. Lady Trojans 42

It was rough going for the 9th grade Lady Cubs in Tues

day’s game against the Lady Trojans. The Lady Cubs were held to just one point in the first half. The lone point came from a free throw at the 4:15 mark of the first quarter. From their, the Lady Trojans scored 19 unanswered points, eight in the first and 11 in the second, to lead 19-1 at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Cubs were able to rebound from the first half to score 13 points. The Lady Cubs hit their first field goal of the game at the 4:36 mark of the third quarter as they trailed 21-4. The Lady Cubs scored seven points in the third quarter while the Lady Trojans scored 12 points to lead 31-8. In the final quarter, the Lady Cubs scored seven points while the Lady Trojans scored 11 points to win the game 42-14.

9th Grade Cubs 25, Jr. Trojans 51

The 9th grade Cubs fought fiercely against the Trojans in the first half. In the first quarter, the Trojans had taken a 6-0 lead down to the 2:38 mark. The Cubs then came rolling back with six points of their own to tie the game at 6-6. The lead went back and forth between the teams in the second quarter, but Malvern was able to hold the lead, 1918, going into halftime. The Cubs scored 13 points in the second while holding the Trojans to 12 points.

The tides would turn in the second half though. The Trojans defense stepped it up and were able to hold the Cubs to only two baskets scored in the second half. In the third quarter, the Cubs led 21-20 over the Trojans at the 4:23 mark before the Trojans went on a 17-point run. The Cubs were spotted two points after the Trojans made a basket in the Cubs’ goal by mistake. At the end of the third, the Trojans led 39-23. In the fourth, the Trojans went on a 10-point run before the Cubs hit their second basket of the second half at the 2:33 mark. The Trojans then add two free throws to end the game with the win 5125.
