People Magazine’s “2020 People of the Year”

- Norma Blanton

People Magazine has named George Clooney, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Selena Gomez, and Regina king as the “2020 People of the Year.” Clooney’s film “The Midnight Sky,” is possibly an Oscar nomination for him. He donated $500,000 to the Equal Justice Initiative (George Floyd’s death), $1 million for COVID-19 relief efforts in Italy, London, and Los Angeles. Dr. Fauci is the Nation’s top infectious disease expert. Gomez has hosted the cooking show, “Selena + Chef” on HBO. She plans to raise $100 million in ten years to give people access to mental health initiative. King, used her voice to encourage people to vote; called for support of marginalized communities during the pandemic, and an end of police brutality of unarmed Black people.

George Frideric Handel mainly composed operas, but they became unpopular in London (he was German). In failing health and bankruptcy, he turned to themes from Scripture. A servant reported that Handel seldom ate or slept, and worked until his fingers could no longer grip his pen. The result is one of the world’s great masterworks, “Messiah.” Two and a half hours of the world’s most magnificent music was composed in less than 25 days. When he finished, he said, “I think that I did see all Heaven before me, and the great God Himself!” Many churches will have time for only the Chrous, but maybe AR PBS will air the entire composition?

Jim Davidson’s column concluded “The more confident a person is of his own value as a person, the better his attitude is toward others and the world in general.”

The Point Cedar Grocery will be open normal hours on December 24 but closed on 25th, Christmas Day. There are several tables inside the store where people can order a meal. More people also are cooking at home and buying more groceries. Several elderly residents have had COVID-19 but with only flu-like symptoms and are all right. The Food Pantry drive-through is open twice a month.

I telephones Florene Goolsby on Monday morning, but she could not understand my creaky voice, but Marcie, a niece, and I talked. On Christmas day all the relatives will not be at the Goolsby home, just her daughter Ovita, her son Noel, and Adam. My problem is that Christmas always seems to come a week too soon, and my cards are not answered. May we all just stay virus-free. The vaccines are available and maybe in a year this can be over. Plus we don’t have two-feet of snow as do some cities in the north.
