7th and 8th grade Cubs split wins with Cobras

Taking on the Fountain Lake Cobras’ 7th and Jr. High squads this week, the Malvern 7th grade and 8th grade Cubs splits wins with the Cobras.

On the road, the 8th grade Cubs pulled out a one point comeback win against the Cobras 23-22. The 7th grade Cubs had made a comeback against the Cobras after trailing in the first half but couldn’t overcome the Cobras to get the win. The 7th grade Cubs lost 17-12 to the Cobras.

Playing two 16 minute running clock halves, the Cobras gained the momentum to take an early lead against the Cubs in the first half. The Cobras scored the opening points and the Cubs were able to tie three minutes later. The Cobras quickly took the lead with a 3-pointer and went on an 11 point run to lead 13-2 over the Cubs with just minutes remaining in the first half. The Cubs were able to make one last basket before the end of the half to trail by nine points, 13-4.

Coming out of the half, the Cubs shifted the momentum with an eight point run. The Cubs had a chance to tie the game at 13 with a 3-point play but missed the tying free throw. After that the Cobras seized all momentum and ended the game with a four point run to win 17-12.

8th Grade Cubs 23, 8th Grade Cobras 22

Also playing two 16 minute running clock halves, the 8th grade Cubs and Jr. Cobras kept it close throughout the game. The Cobras started the game with a wide open lay up to get on the board, but the Cubs quickly tied and then took the lead 4-2. The Cubs and Cobras then went back and forth tying and taking the lead down to the 2:08 mark when the Cobras took the lead 12-11 over the Cubs. The Cobras then made two free throws to extend their lead to 14-11 but with just seconds remaining, the Cubs made a free throw to trail 14-12 at the half.

At the start of the second half, the Cubs once again retied the game. The Cobras broke the tie and went on a

6-2 run down to the 4:34 mark where they led 20-16. The Cubs were able to stop the run with a 3-pointer at the 1:37 mark and come with one point of the Cobras. The Cobras then went back up by three points after a basket at the 1:20 mark, but the Cubs gained late momentum to score at the 31 second mark to trail 22-21. The Cubs got the win over the Cobras rebounding a missed Cobras’ free throw and scoring on a fast break with 15 seconds remaining. From there, the Cobras were unable to make another shot and fell in defeat to the Cubs 23-22.

The 7th and 8th grade Cubs now travel to Arkadelphi­a Monday for their next game. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. with the 7th graders playing first.
