Lady Beavers fall in final seconds to Lady Cardinals on homecoming

With just 10 seconds remaining in Tuesday’s homecoming game, the Glen Rose Lady Beavers had taken a one-point lead over their rivals, the Haskell Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals, when Ashlee Stafford made her second of two free throw attempts.

Harmony Grove then went the length of the court and hit a massive corner 3-pointer with Kallyn Sossamon with just :0.9 seconds remaining. The Lady Beavers made one last attempt to win the game but fell short when the Lady Beavers’ pass down court was intercepte­d by the Lady Cardinals. The Lady Cardinals went on to victory 40-38 over the Lady Beavers.

It was a close game throughout with the lead going back and forth between the two squads through all four quarters. The Lady Cardinals took the lead in the first quarter after starting the game trailing 4-0 to the Lady Beavers. Glen Rose’s Emma McJunkins and Stafford each scored two points to give the Lady Beavers the early momentum. Harmony Grove’s Grace Reese then put the Lady Cardinals on the board with a three-point play to trail 4-3. The Lady Beavers then went on a small run of four points, with Makayla Stevens and Kamryn Raper each scoring, to lead 8-3 with 3:21 remaining in the first quarter. The Lady Cardinals then gained momentum and went on their own run eight points, scored by Reese, Megan Clay, and Sossamon, to end the quarter with a three-point 11-8 lead.

The Lady Beavers came back quickly in the second quarter to tie the game, with Maci Carver draining a 3-pointer, and take the lead, with Raper, McJunkins, and Stevens all scoring. It looked as though the Lady Cardinals were going to be held scoreless in the second quarter but with 2.7 seconds left, Sos

samon went to the free throw line and connected on one free throw. At the half, the Lady Beavers were in control 18-12 over the Cardinals.

Starting the third quarter, Carver drained another 3-pointer to put the Lady Beavers up 21-12 over the Lady Cardinals. The Lady Cardinals then went on a nine-point run, with Reese scoring seven points and Sossamon scoring two points, to tie the game at 21-21 with 4:04 left in the third. Stafford then broke the tie with a free throw to give the lead back to the Lady Beavers with 3:52 left. Scoring and the lead went back and forth between the two teams for the next almost four minutes. With just one second left in the quarter, Harmony Grove’s Clay made a basket to put the Lady Cardinals up 28-27.

Both teams continued to fight in the fourth quarter. Stafford led the Lady Beavers at the top of the fourth with two baskets to give the lead back to the Lady Beavers. The Lady Beavers took a four-point, 32-28, lead when Laney Crutchfiel­d made free throw. The Lady Beavers continued to lead until the 1:48 mark when Clay made two free throws to tie the game at 34-34. Reese then drained a huge 3-pointer 12 seconds later to give the Lady Cardinals the lead 37-36. The efforts of Glen Rose’s Love Doddridge and Stafford brought the Lady Beavers back in the final minute of play. Doddridge hit a jumper from the paint to put the Lady Beavers down by one-point. Stafford then made two free throws to put the Lady Beavers up by one, 38-37, with only 10 seconds left. That’s when the Lady Cardinals were able to get the ball to Sossamon who swished the corner 3-pointer to win the game for the Lady Cardinals, 40-38.

The Lady Cardinals were led in scoring by Reese with 18 points and Sossamon with 11 points. Clay added nine points for the Lady Cardinals while Lanie Chancellor had two points. For the Lady Beavers, Stafford led with 15 points. The next leading scorer was Carver with six points. Stevens and Raper each had five points, McJunkins had four points, Doddridge had two points, and Crutchfiel­d rounded out the Lady Beavers scoring with one point.
