Lady Indians get comeback win against Cossatot River in Indian Classic, thump Foreman in non-conference play

After starting the season with three losses, the Poyen Lady Indians softball team bounced back with wins against Cossatot River and Foreman.

The Lady Indians opened the season with a loss to the Malvern Lady Leopards, 5-0, in the first game of the Indian Classic Tournament March 8. The Indians then lost a close bout with the Woodlawn Bears 6-5 March 9 before falling to close county rival the Bismarck Lady Lions 5-4 last Friday. The Lady Indians turned things around though in their second game of the Indian Classic Saturday. Despite falling behind early, the Lady Indians bounced back to get the win 6-5 over the Cossatot Lady Eagles. On Monday, the Lady Indians continued their winning streak with a dominate win over the Foreman Lady Gators 17-2.

Lady Indians 6, Cossatot River 5

In Saturday’s tournament game, the Lady Indians battled hard with the Cossatot Lady Eagles. In the first inning both teams scored two runs to be tied 2-2 going into the second inning. The Lady Eagles drove in their two runs off one hit to the outfield to lead 2-0 in the top of first inning. The Lady Indians tied the game when Gracen Murphy and Madison Edwards scored in the bottom of the first inning. Murphy scored after the Lady Eagles missed a catch at second base and Edwards scored after a missed catch at third base.

After a scoreless second inning, the Lady Eagles added another two runs to take the lead, 4-2. Once again one hit drove in two runs for the Lady Eagles. The Lady Eagles managed to keep the Lady Indians scoreless through the next two innings and added another run in the top of the fifth to lead 5-2. The Lady Eagles’ fifth run was from a home run.

The Lady Indians didn’t give up though and were able to make a comeback in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, a walk brought in the third run for the Lady Indians as they trailed 5-3. The Lady Indians then tied the game after a hit to right field brought Murphy and Edwards in for two runs. The final and game winning run was scored by Kodee Batchelor after a hit to left field.

The Lady Indians are now scheduled to take on Dierks for their first 7-2A conference game. The Lady Indians will be at Dierks with first pitch being at 4:30 p.m.
