Sing Praise To The Lord

- Guest Columnist

“I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.” Psalms 104:33

My wife Shelli is many things. Patient is one of the words that comes to mind. She shows love, caring and understanding. She is gifted in many ways and shares those gifts with those around her. But she has a secret gift that only a few people know about.

She has an encyclopedic mind. Well let me rephrase that. She is a living, breathing encyclopedia of 1980’s music lyrics. It’s almost uncanny. She even knows the lyrics to “Rock Me Amadeus” which I had no clue even had words except the chorus of “Rock Me Amadeus”. (Which can only be sung while bobbing your head up and down by the way.)

The other day we were driving down the road when for a change I decided to flip it over to the 80’s station. “Karma Chameleon” was on. So of course we had to burst out in song for our two grown boys in the backseat. After the last “come and go” words were sung, the boys audibly groaned. One of them said, “Do you guys really have to do that?”

Well. Of course. It’s like our job description. “Embarrass your children by singing old songs” is like in the top ten of the Parent To Do List.

Then a song called “Forget Me Nots” came on.

I swear I’ve never heard it before. But my wife sang along like she had just heard it yesterday.

“How do you know all these songs?” I asked. “Casey Kasem.” She said in a very direct, matter of fact way. “I never missed a Sunday.”

“Oh.” I said. Like that explained everything. And in a way it does. But only if you know who Casey Kasem is.

About that time Thomas Dolby’s “She Blinded Me With Science” started to play and the boys let out a “Aaarrrgghh” in unison. We looked at each other, smiled that little parent smile that says, “Yes. Yes we are embarrassing you.” And started to sing even louder. I even rolled the windows down. Wherever this day finds you, I hope that it finds you with a song in your heart.

(Extra points if you can sing “99 Luftballons”). Let us pray. Dear God. We know that our happiness comes from you. We know that you fill us with love and gift us with grace and because of this we sing a new song to you. A song for thankfulness and happiness. We thank you for all you have done for us. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
