Harper, Labastida, Perez, Ruelus surge Leopards to shutout conference victory against Devil Dogs 5-0
MALVERN — In a statement showcased by productive offensive and defensive play at Claude Mann Stadium Tuesday, the hometown Malvern Leopards shut down the Morrilton Devil Dogs 5-0 to secure their first 4A-7 Conference victory in senior high boys soccer competition on David Alpe Field.
The week layoff from spring break didn’t affect the aggressive energy and spark for the Leopards to provide another stellar performance in dominance for victory. The Leopards’ Domenique Harper, Angel Perez and Noe Ruelus each sparked the offensive execution to score a goal, while Luis Labastida led the scoring core and scored two consecutive goals in the second half.
Defensively, the Leopards were a stoppable force with goalie DJ Culp stepping up to make several stops and saves during both halves to complete an 80 minute contest of productive play.
Malvern soccer head coach Seth Roberts was very satisfied with how productive the execution stood out offensively and defensively by the Leopards to prevail against Morrilton. The Leopards’ chemistry was a major x-factor and Roberts thought their team work as a unit showed positive signs.
“The boys played the most unselfish game of the year. They shared the ball tremendously and were rewarded with quality shots,” Roberts said.
“I thought our defense and DJ played outstanding stifling their offense. I believe that was our first clean sheet of the year (scoreless game). I really enjoy watching this team grow and gain more confidence in each other,” Roberts added.
He also stated, “If we continue to share the ball and make quality runs we will compete in every game we play. Couldn’t be happier with the way we competed.”
Tonight at 7 p.m., the Leopards are set to return for competition hosting a championship caliber soccer program of the De Queen Leopards for a competitive showdown at Claude Mann Stadium.
