More on the Spanish Flu

- Norma Blanton

Reference my last column, the Spanish Flu problem in 1918: I should have added that when inspectors at ten major population centers evaluated the deaths, they found that the unique targeting of the 20-40 year age group (the strongest and healthiest members of society, including expectant mothers). Usually the virus targeted the very young and the elderly. This was never explained by epidemiologists.

I keep finding Point Cedar UM Church items: Easter was associated with the Passover, a Jewish holiday commemorating the deliverance of the ancient Hebrews from slavery in Egypt. The Council of Nicaea in AD 325 set the date as the first Sunday following the first full moon after the Spring Equinox. Although Christmas was not celebrated for centuries, the celebration of the Resurrection was the foundation doctrine that gave birth to the Church. The Gospel of Mark and the letters of Paul never mention the birth of Jesus, but they boldly declare the Resurrection.

A page from the Ouachita County Historical Quarterly, no date, included a photograph of a headstone of Civil War veteran Henry Myar, which is marked with an iron cross honoring his military service to the Confederacy. Have any of you seen such a cross? It has a round center with four sides which are a part of the center and becoming wider at the ends. (Sorry, I’m not good with this description.)

Jo Thornton Glenn and I were Cleve’s classmates and wished we had called to check on him. He did not attend the last reunion due to vertigo. We had not talked in a long time and I had forgotten that she and husband lived in Calif, and she was on “Queen For A Day” and won many useful prizes.
