Panthers top Tribe, Lady Panthers edge Lady Indians in overtime thriller for conf. openers

The Magnet Cove Lady Panthers traveled to Poyen on Tuesday, Dec. 7 and came away with a 33-31 victory.

Offense was at a premium in the game, which saw Poyen take a 12-7 halftime lead after holding the Lady Panthers scoreless in the second quarter.

Poyen’s Josey Austin hit a free throw with 25.4 seconds left in the fourth quarter to put the Lady Indians up 28-25.

Marleigh Mccutcheon drained a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

In the extra period, Payton Anderson hit a 3-pointer to put Poyen up 31-28 with two minutes left, but the Lady Panthers would score the game’s final five points to secure the win.

Mccutcheon led all scorers with 10 points. Also scoring for Magnet Cove were Kynsli Brashears (8), Haylie Helton (6), Ella Williamson (5), Karsen Davis (3) and Brianna Ramthun (1).

Anderson led Poyen with nine points. Also scoring for Poyen were Kadience Freeman (8), Ellie Sutterfiel­d (6), Josey Austin (5), Kyndal Morrison (2) and Analyn Pacheco (1).

In other action during the night, four players scored in double figures for Magnet Cove as the Panthers handled Poyen 59-23.

Jace Beckwith and Evin Ashcraft both scored 13 points to lead Magnet Cove. Owen Tillery scored 11 and Kaiden Baker added 10. Also scoring for the Panthers were Kizer Kidder (6), Jacob Clausen (4) and Hayden Browning.

Dylan Spurlin was Poyen’s top scorer with nine points, all from the perimeter. Other Poyen scorers included Grayson Graves (8), Ethan Hubbard (2), Cody Samples (2), Hayden Byrd (1) and Brayden Hull (1).

In the night’s opening game, Tayla Tanaka scored eight points to lift the seventh-grade Lady Panthers to a 14-4 victory.

In the junior boys’ game, Poyen came away with a 20-15 win, behind 10 points from Karson Glindeman.
