Glen Rose stuns with wins against rivals’ Malvern on the hardwood

MALVERN — The Leopard Center showcased two huge showdowns for Tuesday night rivalry hoops of the hometown Malvern Leopards and Lady Leopards hosting rivals’ Glen Rose in a non-conference encounter for senior high basketball competitio­n.

With an electric atmosphere, the visiting Glen Rose Beavers and Lady Beavers stunned the Leopards hoop fans and came away victorious and swept wins against the Malvern.

In the senior high girls match-up, the Lady Leopards came out with the early momentum and led throughout the first eight minutes of action. Lynasia Moore got Malvern rolling early and sank a jumper to give the Lady Leopards the 2-0 lead. But Maci Carver buried a triple to give Glen Rose a one-point lead 3-2. Malvern answered back with Dy’sire Jones scoring from the field, and Ayanna Johnson splitting a pair of free-throws to give Malvern back the lead—5-3 at the 3:25 mark. Key inside scoring from Glen Rose’s Sydney Riggan tied the game at 5-5, then Riggan nailed a baseline jumper putting the Lady Beavers back up 7-5 with 1:48 left in the first quarter. Jones for Malvern sank the last two shots of the period and Malvern ended the first quarter with a two-point lead over Glen Rose, 9-7.

In the second quarter, the Lady Beavers sparked and outscored Malvern 20-4. At the break, the Lady Beavers led Malvern 27-13. In the third quarter, the Lady Beavers posted a double-digit scoring period to outscore the Lady Leopards 10-9. After three quarters of action, Glen Rose held a 15-point lead against Malvern, 37-22.

In the fourth, the Lady Leopards had some ground to build and made a late surge to cut their deficit to single digits with under two minutes remaining in the game. Moore, with Cayla Spencer, Jones, Nadia Mitchell all coasted during the Lady Leopards run—cutting Malvern’s deficit to 40-34.

Glen Rose’s Ariany Sanchez split a pair of free-throws, then Carver finished the contest by sinking her foul shots with a bucket from the field to secure a 11-point Lady Beaver victory.

For the game, Lady Leopards’ Jones led the way with 15 points for double-figures. Mitchell, Moore, and Johnson each contribute­d four points apiece, Chasney Cooper, Alexis Hawkins and Spencer each finished with two points. For the Lady Beavers, Carver led with 10 points for double-figures. Carver also drilled two triples from beyond the arc. Stevens drilled two triples and finished with nine points, Riggan added eight points, Alexis Perryman swished a trifecta and had five points. CJ Mccollough, Kennedy Frost and Ashlee Stafford each had four points apiece with Sanchez chipping in one point from the foul line.

For the nightcap, in the senior boys match-up, it was a low scoring affair, but favored the Beavers. Glen Rose ended the first eight minutes of play leading 9-3. In the second, the Beavers outscored Malvern 9-2.

At the break, Glen Rose took a 18-5 lead into the locker room to give Malvern a 13-point deficit at halftime. In the second half, the Beavers stayed in command and outscored the Leopards 17-14—resulting in a 14-point win for Glen Rose.

For the game, Leopards’ Dyelon Caradine led the way with four points. John Barnes drilled a triple for three points, Kaleb Bright, Robert Grisby, Jabri Artis, DJ Culp and Conner Lewis each had two points apiece.

For Glen Rose, Cohen Carter led all scorers with 12 points and nailed two triples for the lone player in double-figures. Ty Hood followed with nine points and drilled three triples, big man Brayden Youngman added eight points and Kaleb Meredith finished with six points.

The Glen Rose Beavers and Lady Beavers return to the hardwood tonight, hosting Bauxite at the Glen Rose Sports Arena. The Malvern Leopards and Lady Leopards are set for action Friday at home to open conference play hosting their rival Nashville at the Leopard Center.
