Poyen basketball tipping off to achieve success with key production
POYEN — The 2021-2022 basketball season is ready to “Roll Tribe” excitement for the Poyen Indians and Lady Indians on the hardwood.
GAME TIME—LADY INDIANS
The Lady Indians are keeping their spirit of strong traditionally pro- ductive basketball progressing under the guidance of state championship head coach Mickey Shaffer. As the programs’ historically great basketball mind of the hardwood, Shaffer is conducting the Lady Indians in the right direction. Thus far, several Lady Indians are sizzling with electrifying play from early season action.
The stout play and shooting from Ellie Sutterfield and point guard guidance by Payton Anderson are surging the Lady Indians in key victories. During their home bout against Dermott, Sutterfield provided the spark by exploding for 22 points and drilled two triples from beyond the arc as the overall top-performer of the night. Point guard Anderson followed by controlling the offensive execution and dropping 10 points—along swishing two rainbow trifectas from downtown in the Lady Indians
Arena.
The Lady Indians suffered a heartbreaking overtime thriller in their conference opener to arch-rival Magnet Cove at home this week. The Lady Indians look to rebound back into the win column in league and aim to make a strong push through tournament time in February—for some dancing in March.
GAME TIME—INDIANS
The Tribe hoopsters experienced a little feel of basketball competition for the 2021-2022 season. Head coach Jansen Hardage returns for his second season taking over the Indians basketball program at Poyen. Hardage aims to keep the Tribe rolling on the hardwood now that his roster is complete with the addition of the Indians football members.
After the Thanksgiving break, the Tribe competed in home action hosting Dermott with a slim roster. With only six Indians to compete, the Poyen still made an impact by their production for the home fans at the Jerry and Ouida Newton Arena. The Tribe’s Dayden Jones led the scoring department with 13 points and drilled a triple beyond the arc for double-figures. Grayson Graves added eight points, Hayden Byrd finished with six points, Ethan Hubbard contributed four points, Jesse Kelley drained a trifecta from beyond the arc for three points and Ronnie Lemons chipped in two points for the Tribe. During rivalry hoops to open-conference play, the Indians fell short to arch-rival Magnet Cove, Spurlin with Graves, Hubbard, Cody Samples, Hayden Byrd and Brayden Hull all contributed. The Indians will look to regroup and make a strong run during more league play and produce victory for a productive season on the hardwood under the leadership of head Indian coach Hardage.
