Lady Indians roll huge, Indians fall in conf. battles hosting Mt. Pine

The Poyen Lady Indians kicked off the 2022 calendar year with a 51-12 shellackin­g of 7-2A Conference foe Mountain Pine at home on Tuesday, January 4.

Poyen held its opponents to just four made field goals in 22 attempts (18.2 percent). The Lady Indians only made 28 percent of their shots (19-67), but made up for it with 28 offensive rebounds.

Poyen’s defense held Mountain Pine in check with 25 steals and turned the Red Devils over 36 times. The Lady Indians did not allow a made basket in the first 10:02 of the game, leading 15-2 after one quarter and 34-5 at the half.

Ellie Sutterfiel­d led Poyen with 13 points and Payton Anderson scored 11.

Also scoring for Poyen were Lexi Bunch (six); Kyndall Morrison (five); Jossie Hughes, Rachel Ellison and Hannah Skorcz (four each); and Josey Austin and Kadience Freeman (two apiece).

The Indians did not fair as well in the night’s final game, falling 63-50.

Poyen held a 23-19 lead with 3:18 left in the first half, but we’re out-scored 14-3 in an eight-minute, 41-second span to take control of the game.

The Indians tied the game 3535, but the Red Devils committed few mistakes in the game, allowing them to go on a 12-3 run at the end of the third quarter.

Poyen won the rebounding battle 36-29 and blocked five shots, but Mountain Pine turned the ball over just five times, while forcing Poyen into 16.

Grayson Graves led the Indians with 15 points. Dayden Jones added 14 points, Ethan Hubbard scored seven points, Parker Beard had six points, Dylan Spurlin chipped in with four points and Poyen got two points each from Cody Samples and Brayden Hull.

Poyen’s seventh-grade girls won the opening game of the night 14-5 behind five points from Gannyn Murphy. The Junior Lady Indians fell 46-25 and were led by Ashlyn Lenard and Avrie Jones, who both had six points.

Next up for Poyen is a trip to Dierks on Friday, Jan. 7. The junior girls, senior girls and senior boys will all be in action beginning at 5 p.m.
