Stafford sparks with 12 to cruise Lady Beavers past Prescott

Jr. Lady Beavers edged in final seconds against Jr. Lady Cubs

GLEN ROSE — For Thursday night hoops at the Glen Rose Sports Arena, the Glen Rose Lady Beavers junior and senior high hoopsters split conference victories against Prescott.

The junior high girls tipped off the night’s action and showcased a down to the wire thriller for their 24 minute contest. Following a 4-4 knot at the end of the first quarter, the Jr. Lady Beavers sparked in the second period and outscored Prescott 5-2. At halftime, the Jr. Lady Beavers took a three-point lead into the locker room over Prescott, 9-6. In the second half, the Jr. Lady Beavers stepped up their level of play and created a little breathing room and led 15-9 at the end of the third quarter. Madi Hutcheson, Hadley Hood and Emma Lewallen knocked down buckets from the field during Glen Rose’s surge in the third. While heading into the fourth quarter with a six-point advantage, the Jr. Lady Beavers momentum started to slip as the Lady Cubs rallied back, cutting their deficit to a one-point margin, 18-17 under a minute remaining in the game.

With 12 seconds left, the Lady Cubs sank a game-winning bucket to propel them to a 1918 win against Glen Rose. For the game, Jr. Lady Beavers’ Hutcheson, Lewallen and Aubrey Pennington led the way with four points apiece. Hood followed with three points and Zolee Denham added two points which was the game’s first points scored in the first quarter.

For the night’s second matchup, the Glen Rose Lady Beavers took care of business on the court for a sizzling 39-16 victory against the Prescott Lady Wolves. Glen Rose’s overall stout defense led to a 23-point win and captured the first victory of their two game league series meeting against the Lady Wolves. Glen Rose came out with a productive start. Ashlee Stafford started their spark by playing the passing lane well for a steal and went coast to coast to score the first bucket of the game to give the Lady Beavers a 2-0 advantage at the 6:35 mark. From there, it was all the Lady Beavers.

Inside post player Sydney Riggan added to the spark by drilling a shot in the post area, then Laney Crutchfiel­d scored off a tip-in to give Glen Rose a 6-0 lead. Prescott would chip in four points, but the Lady Beavers’ Allie Bell and Kennedy Frost both contribute­d to their side of the scoreboard by splitting a pair of freethrows. At the end of the first, Glen Rose led Prescott, 8-4. In the second, the Lady Beavers outscored Prescott 11-3. At the break, the Lady Beavers maintained a double-digit lead over Prescott, 19-7 at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Beavers kept rolling with a productive team effort of execution on both ends of the court. Makayla Stevens swished a triple beyond the arc, with Stafford posting a bucket in the third quarter that gave Glen Rose a 26-13 lead down to 1:13 left to play.

Then, to end third quarter action, Maci Carver drilled a triple for a buzzer-beater to extend Glen Rose’s lead to a 29-13 lead over Prescott.

In the fourth, the Lady Beavers put the game away by posting a double-digit scoring period to outscore Prescott 10-3. Stevens, Crutchfiel­d and Stafford all sparked with offensive contributi­ons for buckets—emily Steed finished the period with a jumper and splitting a pair of free-throws to march Glen Rose to victory.

For the game, Lady Beavers’ Stafford led all scorers with 12 points as the lone hoopster in double-figures. Stevens followed with eight points and drained two triples from downtown. Carver added five points and drilled a triple beyond the arc.

Crutchfiel­d had four points, Steed finished with three points, Alexis Perryman and Riggan had two points apiece—frost and Bell chipped in one point apiece.

The Lady Beavers are scheduled for conference hoops Tuesday, January 11 on the road against in-county neighbors Bismarck.
