Arkansas Poll Finds Voter Support For Income Tax Phase Out

-

LITTLE ROCK – Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Republican majorities in the Arkansas House and Senate have established eliminating Arkansas’ income tax as a top priority. Polling data from Opportunity Arkansas shows overwhelming support for this push. The survey also reveals that voters support eliminating sales tax exemptions and cutting state government spending to enable further income tax reductions.

Key takeaways from the poll of more than 400 Arkansas voters:

• By a nearly 2:1 margin, Arkansas voters support eliminating the state income tax, including a majority of Republicans and a 3:1 margin of Independents

• A majority of voters support a combination of reductions in state spending and sales tax exemptions in order to phase out the state income tax

• Arkansans are more likely to support eliminating the income tax when they know it would make the state more competitive and put more money in the pockets of Arkansas workers

• By a nearly 2:1 margin, Arkansans—including a majority of Republican voters—support eliminating sales tax exemptions if doing so would enable Arkansas to eliminate the state income tax

Opportunity Arkansas founder and CEO Nic Horton offered the following statement:

“Arkansas's state income tax is a punishment on work, full stop. Phasing it out will mean workers have more money in their pockets and that we will

finally be able to compete with our neighbors on a level playing field. And it means unprecedented economic growth and opportunities for generations to come. Arkansans across the political spectrum understand that and they are anxious to see policymakers deliver."
