- By Virginia Pitts Staff Writer

Nothing beats a good book to inform, educate, and expand our horizons. It’s fun and has countless benefits, being key to personal and professional development, and it can bring communities together in common purpose and understanding.

March is National Reading Month, and as such, readers all across the country will be taking part in all sorts of individual and group activities related to the occasion to promote a love of reading and appreciation for the teachers, librarians, parents and those who encourage that love for literature and reading in others.

Poyen School District is constantly finding new ways to foster a love of reading, and they’re excited to participate in the Read Across America reading challenge. The district announced several activities they encourage students to take part in, to kick off a month full of literary adventures and learning. The theme is travel, because “Reading takes you on the greatest adventures!”

Tuesday, Feb. 28 highlights “The Power of Words.” Students are encouraged to wear clothing with words displayed on them.

Wednesday, March 1 heralds the “Reading Celebrates all Cultures” theme, where students are expected to wear something that represents their hometown and/or culture.

Thursday, March 2 is National Read Across America Day, designated as such to commemorate Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Millions of people will participate in varied activities, but students at Poyen are asked to “Jump into the Drivers Seat” by dressing as their favorite Dr. Seuss character.

Friday, March 3, Poyen students will be allowed to wear pajamas to school that day because “Traveling is exhausting, so relax with a good book.” For more ideas on how you can celebrate National Reading Month, go to the National Education Association’s website, www.nea.org.
