City Council Member Mike Smith

- Special to the MDR

Mike Smith has been serving the city of Malvern in different ways for many years, but his newest role is a seat on the Malvern City Council. Smith won the votes of the people in his district during the November 2022 elections and was sworn into office soon after the turn of the year, along with other new and returning elected officials.

The Malvern City Council is currently comprised of members Sam Bryant and William Wilson sitting in Positions 1 and 2, respectively, of Ward 1; Lynn Davis and J. Wayne Reynolds, Positions 1 and 2 in Ward 2; Peggy Lusinger and Mathew Keenan, Positions 1 and 2 for Ward 3; and Michael Smith and David Cross, Positions 1 and 2 for Ward 4.

Smith’s role will have him representing his district in city matters, and at other levels of government; helping to set local policies and legislation, and sharing those new developments with the community; and specifically, helping to make important decisions regarding the city’s budget, municipal service rates, tax levies, city codes and other measures.

Smith served as Superintendent of the City of Malvern Street Department for almost eight years before retiring in late 2022. Before that, he worked for many years at Huber Specialty Hydrates in Bauxite. He is new to this type of public service but has taken to it with ease and looks forward to working with the other Alderman to move the city forward, with respect to economic development, acceptance of others, and united efforts in the best interest of all citizens.

Smith beat out incumbent Alderman Larry Stiles for the City Council position in November but experienced a smooth transition into office because of his familiarity with the City Council proceedings and what his new position would entail, as his role in the Street Department required him to regularly attend City Council meetings and submit monthly reports pertaining to the inner workings of his department.

“I attended all the City Council meetings because of my job,” Smith said. “I just wanted to continue to help do things for Malvern.”

Smith’s inherent nature shines through in his past professionalism on the job and his sincere wish to serve the people in his district, with authentic representation and fairness in the political arena.

“I just want to see Malvern grow,” Smith said of his intentions in office. “I know there’s more to it than what people think.”

Smith was born and raised in Malvern, graduating MHS in 1973. He went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force and returned to his hometown after the military. Smith has been happily married for close to 19 years to his loving wife, Teresa, and the couple have been blessed with four children.

Smith is happy to be the voice for his ward and will continue to serve the citizens of Malvern with equity, decency and progressive ideas that bely the true voice of the people.
