Back to School Block Party

- By Virginia Pitts Staff Writer

The Malvern/hsc Chamber of Commerce and dozens of area business, organizations and individuals came together for the Back to School Block Party, held Thursday, Aug. 4 on the HSC Courthouse Lawn.

Hundreds of people turned out for the much-anticipated community event, to take advantage of all the free goodies being offered to help prepare HSC students for the 2022-23 school season. Over 400 kids received free items, courtesy of local non-profit organizations, churches, school groups, small businesses, big corporations and other caring partners in the day’s festivities.

Finding Hope, for one example, gladly gave away over 350 pairs of shoes, socks, and underwear during the Block Party. They gave special thanks to a nameless individual who donated $100 specifically for the effort, to Walmart in Malvern for donating underwear and socks, and to their selfless volunteers for sorting, packaging, loading and unloading, and handing out items during the event.

Free hot dogs and snacks were provided, and numerous organizations handed out backpacks, school supplies, games and goodies, shoes and socks, toiletries, other essential items, and several local hairdressers set up in the Chamber building to provide free haircuts, which was an unexpected perk that mothers and others were all too happy to take advantage of.

“That was one amazing turnout of students and families for the Back to School Block Party,” Chamber officials stated on social media after the event. “The courthouse lawn was full, and we appreciate the County and City support. Everything done to encourage our young people to become good students and good future citizens is a good investment.”
