Hot Springs Beauty College

- Special to the MDR

At Hot Springs Beauty College, students can take part in cosmetology, manicuring and esthetics programs.

The college is a family-owned business that has been operating in Hot Springs since 1984. The owner, Andrea Causey, has worked at the college for 15 years and is a third-generation employee.

The college started in the former theatre in downtown Hot Springs and has since moved into a 7,000-square foot building. They currently have 75 students enrolled, the maximum capacity allowed by Arkansas law.

The college is located at 100 Cones Rd. in Hot Springs.

Since the school is growing, Akard hired two new staff members to work along with lead instructors who have worked at the college for over 10 years.

Akard noted that at the local, family-owned business and boutique college, the graduate job placement rate is at 88 percent. The school is also accredited and offers federal financial aid for students who qualify.

“Our mission is to not just teach basic skills, but to teach real-world skills that are being used in salons today here and nationwide. But most of all, we really work to ensure that our students have a happy, pleasant and fulfilling college experience. Many of our students are referred to us by other graduates and oftentimes, we have second-generation students who have had a parent graduate from our program years before,” Akard said.

She also added that she is currently working toward a two-year goal for the college to go completely paperless.

The esthetics program requires 600 clock hours and will take about five months to complete. The program covers nail extensions, apres gel nails, acrylic nails, sculptured nails, gel polish and nail shaping.

Along with educating students, Akard said individuals at the college take pride in being a part of the community.

“We have had the pleasure of seeing many of our graduates become successful business owners and put back into our community. Our students work directly on clients, which gives us the opportunity to serve the local people while they are also helping students gain that valuable experience,” she said.
