Panthers blow past CSJ 17-2, Tribe hang tough, fall to Rison 9-2
POYEN — The annual Poyen Indian Classic got underway on the diamond Monday for intense baseball game competition at the Poyen Sports Complex.
Magnet Cove Panthers 17 Conway St. Joseph Bulldogs 2
The Magnet Cove Panthers blasted off the tournament’s action with a 15-run rout victory against Conway St. Joseph Bulldogs 17-2 Monday night. The Panthers nabbed its first win of the season off a productive outing on the mound by Luke Harper earning the win and struck out eight batters—giving up one hit in the blowout victory. Offensively, Cameron Grassman and Harper led at the plate and had two hits apiece. Julius “The Juice” Mcclellan with Harper sparked and drove in three runs for three RBI’S apiece.
Poyen Indians 2 Rison Wildcats 9
The Tribe battled in a competitive match-up but fell to the Rison Wildcats 9-2 for their outing in a sixth inning duel. The Wildcats held a 5-2 lead over the Indians through the third inning. In the fourth and fifth innings, the Wildcats routed two runs apiece and held the Tribe scoreless in both innings to secure a seven-run win. Rison tallied nine runs on five hits with two errors—while the Tribe sparked for two runs on five hits.
Leading the offense for the Tribe was Ryan Ray, Austin
Webb, Landon Crosby, Trenton Russell and
Colt Barrett each collecting a hit apiece. Hayden
Byrd drove in a run for an RBI, and Webb and Ray each scored a run apiece. On the mound, Kullen Connor pitched three innings, allowed three hits, five runs and struck out five batters and threw 45 strikes across the plate. Karson Glindeman pitched two innings, allowed two hits, four runs and struck out one batters and threw 33 strikes to heat up the strike zone.

If weather permits, the Indian Classic will continue Thursday, March 9 with the Indians facing Conway St. Joseph at 4:30 p.m., then Bismarck squares off against Rison at 6:30 p.m. at the Poyen Sports Complex.
