Lady Lions defeat Poyen in high scoring match-up

POYEN — The Bismarck Lady Lions had a victorious outing on the diamond Tuesday in their rivalry showdown against the Poyen Lady Indians, 12-9 during the non-conference softball showcase at the Poyen Sports Complex.

The Lady Lions sparked for 12 runs on 14 hits while the Lady Indians tallied nine runs on 13 hits. Both teams displayed some powerful offensive execution in the frame to post double-digit hits in their match-up.

The Lady Lions ignited two runs apiece in the first through the fourth innings that led to a 8-6 lead over the Lady Indians. The big inning came in the fifth inning for the Lady Lions—scoring four runs to take a 12-6 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Indians rallied to cut their deficit by scoring three runs for their most productive inning of the contest. Both teams kept each other scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, which resulted in the Lady Lions roaring for the road win.

Bismarck’s Ellie Norris led at the plate with three hits and drove in four runs for four RBIS. Avery Efird, Cadence Collins, Karli Daniels, and Norah Kopkau each collected two hits apiece and Bailey Burch with Chloe Ellenwood contribute­d with a hit apiece in the frame. Collins, Daniels, and Kopkau each drove in two runs apiece, while Efird and Katie Mcelhannon drove in a run for an RBI. The Lady Lion core of Efird, L. Ventress, Collins, Daniels, and Kopkau each scored two runs apiece— Norris, Burch, both scored a run apiece.

Leading the base running for the Lady Lions were Collins, Peyton Mogel, Efird and Daniels each

had a stolen base apiece. In the pitcher’s circle, Ellenwood pitched two innings, allowed four hits, three earned runs and struck out four batters and threw 25 strikes. Norris came in for the relief, pitched five innings, allowed nine hits, five earned runs and struck out two batters and threw 44 strikes.

Poyen’s Rachel Ellison and Olivia Spurlin led at the plate for the Lady Indians with four hits apiece. Ellison drove in three runs for three RBIS, and Spurlin drove in two runs for two RBIS. Hanna Skorcz hammered two hits at the plate and drove in a run for an RBI. Emma Wise with Kyndal Morrison (double) and Sydney Daily each sparked for a hit apiece. Wise also had an RBI. Ellison scored three runs, while Morrison, Wise, Austin, Daily, Skorcz, and Ashlyn Leonard each scored a run apiece.

Ellison pitched a complete game, struck out six batters, allowed 14 hits, eight earned runs and threw 99 strikes across the plate as a workhorse in seven innings.
