formed an Auxiliary to help the Southern Mono Healthcare District. Mammoth began to grow...from 600 folks in 1965 to 1319 in 1970. The SMH Auxiliary had been raising money and decided to use those funds for a hospital in Mammoth. The Auxiliary paid for the publicity supporting the construction bond and convinced Mammoth that we needed our own hospital. The bond failed in two elections but the women persevered. The bond passed in 1974. Ten acres were purchased in 1975; ground-breaking took place in 1976 and Mammoth Hospital was dedicated in 1978 .... ten years after the Auxiliary formed. SMH Auxiliary became Mammoth Hospital Auxiliary. Mammoth Hospital Auxiliary is a fellowship of volunteers dedicated to supporting each other, the hospital, its patients and the community. In order to raise funds, MHA opened a thrift shop in 1979 which evolved into the Cast Off .... staffed only with volunteers. I began volunteering in 2010 and have found the work to be satisfying, so much fun and utterly worthwhile. MHA has donated over $5 million in lifesaving equipment and programmatic support to Mammoth Hospital over the lifetime of the organization and now works closely with the Mammoth Hospital Foundation to continue to provide the “margin of excellence” in healthcare in the Eastern Sierra.
