Eastern Sierra Chamber Orchestra Spring Concerts start Friday

- Times Staff Report

The Eastern Sierra Chamber Orchestra invites everyone to its Spring Concerts on Friday, May 10th at St Joseph’s Church in Mammoth and Saturday, May 11th at Cerro Coso College in Bishop. Both concerts begin at 7:30 and are free to the public.

On the program are popular works by Grieg, Bizet and Tchaikovsky, and the featured soloist is the 22-year-old pianist Ari Schuldt.

Since graduating with honors from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, Bloomington, last May, Ari has been performing with the resident Felici Piano Trio on four programs of its winter series and visiting schools in Mono and Inyo counties for Kids Concerts; he has been playing for the Missoula Children’s Theatre productions in Coleville and Bridgeport and supporting the choir programs of Haley Hurd and Mike Hammers at MUSD.

The Eastern Sierra Chamber Orchestra is a community group and class at CCCC that meets on alternating Tuesday nights in Bishop and Mammoth and has been directed by Brian Schuldt since 2004. The group’s members range in age from 14 to 80 and include people with a variety of professional backgrounds that share a love for great music. For the concerts the group is reinforced with a number of professional musicians.

The program opens with Edvard Grieg’s “Peer Gynt” suite, including the famous “Dance in the Hall of the Mountain King”. From Norway, it will go to Spain with Georges Bizet’s “Carmen Suite” which is based on the most catchy tunes of the eponymous opera. The highlight of the concert is the first movement of Tchaikovsky’s fabulous Piano Concerto, one of the great works of the Romantic repertoire.

This short program of colorful orchestral music is very entertaining and well suited for young listeners! Bring the whole family and be inspired by Ari’s virtuosity and musicianship!
