Tatum leads Celtics past Heat to force Game 6 in East finals

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. » The Boston Celtics staved off eliminatio­n on Friday night, putting together a 41-point third quarter to take control en route to a 121-108 victory over Miami in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Celtics trailed by seven at halftime but used a 21-3 run early in the third to seize control of the game before pulling away in the fourth quarter.

Jayson Tatum scored 31 points, had eight rebounds and six assists. Jaylen Brown scored 26 for Boston.

Goran Dragic scored 23 to pace Miami, which still holds a 3-2 series lead. Game 6 is on Sunday night.

SHATTENKIR­K LIFTS LIGHTNING » Kevin Shattenkir­k scored in overtime to lift Tampa Bay to a 5- 4 victory against Dallas in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final.

Tampa Bay overcame an early 2- 0 deficit, getting two goals from Brayden Point plus goals from Yanni Gourde and Alex Killhorn to take a 4- 3 lead in the third period.

Former San Jose Shark Joe Pavelski scored his second goal of the game for Dallas to tie the game at 4- 4 and force overtime.

Tampa Bay takes a 3-1 series lead into Game 5 on Saturday.

RAIDERS WILL BE WITHOUT RECEIVER RUGGS VS PATRIOTS » The Las Vegas Raiders will be without speedy rookie receiver Henry Ruggs III this week because of injuries to his knee and hamstring.

Ruggs was ruled out for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots.

REDS SAY BROADCASTE­R BRENNAMAN RESIGNS » The Cincinnati Reds say team broadcaste­r Thom Brennaman has resigned following his use of an antigay slur on air lastmonth.

Brennaman used the slur moments after the feed from the Fox Sports Ohio telecast returned from a commercial break. Brennaman did not seem to realize he was already on air. He later apologized.

Brennaman has called major league games for 33 years and has been with Fox Sports for the past 27.

College football

MAC RETURNS WITH FOOTBALL SEASON » The Mid-American Conference, the first major college football league to postpone its season, has become the final one to jump back in, making it 10 out of 10 conference­s that will play in the fall.

The MAC will start Nov. 4 and the championsh­ip game will be played Dec. 18 or 19.

HORNET STING, BIRDIES TAKE SWAFFORD TO LEAD AT PUNTA CANA » A hornet sting early and a bunch of birdies late carried Hudson Swafford to a 5-under 67 for a two-shot lead going into the weekend of the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championsh­ip.

Swafford started on the backnine and it was largely uneventful, except for that hornet that stung him on the joint of his pinky finger while he reached for his putter after playing one hole.
