Rainy week in store for Marin

- By Adrian Rodriguez arodriguez@marinij.com

Mount Tamalpais’ Middle Peak recorded 3.23 inches of rain in the weekend storm that passed over Marin, and more rain is expected to arrive by Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

“It still looks like the storm door is going to be open for another week,” said Brooke Bingaman, a meteorologist for the agency. “However, the climate outlook for the next few months shows that we will be below normal precipitation for the season.”

Another round of rain is expected to come late Tuesday, with the strongest showers arriving Wednesday afternoon and continuing through Thursday.

More rain could return by Monday, Bingaman said.

“We are in a La Niña year, which typically means most of the storms, their track will stay to stay up north,” Bingaman said. “There is still a possibility, like with the current storms, that they will track our way.”

The 72- hour rainfall totals Monday included 1.77 inches in Kentfield, 1.26 inches in Mill Valley, 1.45 inches at Mount Barnabe, 1.19 inches in Olema and about an inch to other Marin communities, according to the weather service.

The weather service would typically record 12.88 inches of rain in Kentfield from Oct. 1, which is the beginning of the water year, to date, Bingaman said.

After the weekend storm, the total rain in Kentfield for this year is 4.06 inches, which is about 31.5% of normal. An average water year would bring 47.98 inches of rain. As of Monday, Kentfield had about 8.5% of normal rainfall, she said.

Marin County could receive another inch or more of rain, which is not a lot, but helpful to keep the county from drying out, Bingaman said.

“The good news about these rain systems is that they’re bringing us nice slow and steady rain,” she said. “If we get too much rain all at once that will have adverse effects, especially on the burn scars from fires we saw this summer and fall.”

As of Sunday, Lake Lagunitas collected 5.28 inches of rain this season, or 58.13% of average
