This summer’s Tennis Championships canceled
The 2021 Marin Tennis Championships — initially scheduled to take place in June — have been canceled, event organizers announced on Sunday.
This marks the second consecutive year that the event has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“After much deliberation, we have made the tough decision to cancel the 2021 Marin Championships,” the tournament director wrote in an email. “We understand that the current restrictions and issues may not be the same now as they would be in May, there is no guarantee of significant improvement by then.
“And, since the tournament team needs a 6 to 9 month lead time to prepare for the tournament which includes securing sponsors, marketing, preparing facilities, raising funds for prize money, we cannot ensure all players have the best possible player experience, since there are just too many variables at this point.”
The tournament, entering its 45th year, is usually held across three venues — Mill Valley Tennis Club, The Club at Harbor Point and Scott Valley Tennis Club.
Event organizers are turning their focus to the 2022 edition of the tournament but no announcements have been made about it to this point.
College hoops
Marin City native Darrion Trammell was named the Western Athletic Conference player of the week after scoring 25 points and dishing out 13 assists for Seattle University in a 84-68 win over Portland on Dec. 30.
Trammell played high school basketball at St. Ignatius then went to City College of San Francisco before transferring to Seattle.
Trammell led the Redhawks (6- 5) in scoring for the fifth time this season. He ranks second in the conference in points per game (17.5) and is the leader in assists (6.2).
Trammell is part of a Marin contingent for the Redhawks. Former Drake standout player and Tam coach Alex Pribble is an assistant coach at Seattle and former Branson Standout Viktor Rajkovic is also on the roster.
