Get an electric vehicle, be part of climate solution
I am writing in regard to the recent editorial headlined, “Electric car goal faces big challenge,” published Dec. 21. It raises some interesting questions about the feasibility of the county’s goal for half of Marin’s vehicles to be powered by electricity by 2030.
The editorial is correct that the goal is ambitious, but the answer is surprisingly simple because today’s electric vehicles go far, cost less and charge fast.
All it really takes is consumer education. The editorial refers to the cost of EVs, however the typically higher purchase price compared to an identical gasoline-fueled vehicle is offset by the EV’s much lower fuel and maintenance cost.
The editorial refers to the need for financial incentives, however substantial incentives for EVs are already available at the local, state and federal level.
The editorial refers to the need for charging stations, however more than 85% of EV drivers charge at home or at work, and Marin County already has hundreds of public charging stations with many more on the way.
And the editorial refers to market and supply issues, however most auto manufacturers are “full speed ahead” on EV investment and are continually introducing new models.
Yes, it is an ambitious goal, but all it takes is for you, when you do buy or lease your next car, to check out the more than 60 models of EVs now available and buy or lease one.
EVs are comparable in price, way more fun to drive and outperform any gasoline-fueled car. By buying an EV, you will be driving part of our climate solution rather than part of the problem.
