Trump has relegated Republican Party to pariah status

Jan. 6, 2021 now joins 9/11 and Dec. 7, 1941 as days that will live in infamy.

The first in time occurred due to an expanding Japanese Empire, the second was perpetrated by Arab terrorists and the third occurred at the urging of the president of the United States and was executed by a violent mob of his henchmen.

Americans can no longer brag that for 250 years it’s witnessed the peaceful transfer of presidential power. On Wednesday, American exceptionalism was knifed in the back. We demonstrated to the democratic world watching in real time that the USA resembles a banana republic whose self- obsessed ruler refuses to acknowledge the popular will.

What the globe saw was an attempted coup d’etat against the American people. Whether the insurrection is sedition or treason is better left to the courts.

Without doubt, a mentally unhinged Donald Trump could very easily do more damage before his inglorious exit on Jan. 20.

Responsible voices are calling on Vice President Mike Pence and the cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment. That neverused provision is designed to remove a president incapable of carrying out his constitutional duties. The National Association of Manufacturers, hardly a collection of left-wing radicals, has now urged the 25th Amendment’s immediate deployment as has

Larry Hogan, Maryland’s Republican governor.

This violent presidentially inspired revolt spells the end of Republicans as a legitimate party. Any political organization which believes results from elections are fair only if their side prevails is not a democratic institution. Since “Trump” and “Republican” are now synonyms, last week marked the transition of the GOP from a tainted brand to a pariah.

There’s an immediate need for a new constitutional-loyal second party. Without that development, the two-party system is meaningless. True conservatives will find the change congenial since Trumpism isn’t “conservative.” The soon-to- depart president represents radical populist authoritarianism, the definitional antithesis of conservatism.

Those who remain silent over Trump’s lies about this election’s legitimacy were complicit in the insurrection. That includes members of Marin’s Republican Central Committee who still remain silent. It’s one thing to unanimously endorse Trump’s reelection. It’s something entirely different to either agree with or even fail to renounce Trump’s delusion that the election was rigged.

Marin’s GOP and its chair Jack Wilkinson need to speak up since silence is now acquiescence to sedition. The local party needs to level with their followers telling then Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were elected fair and square.

There is an easy route forward for registered Republicans outraged over Trump’s unhinged conduct. Immediately contact Marin’s Registrar of Voters or go to the California Secretary of State’s website and change your registration. Then, either register as either a “No Party Preference” independent or with the new fiscally prudent, socially aware and pro-environment Common Sense Party.

The latter, led by former GOP South Bay Congress member Tom Campbell and retired Judge Quentin Kopp, is just getting started. It has the potential to be what the Golden State needs: a center-right second party.

*** If mainstream liberal Democrats, independents and center-right Republicans doubt the Biden-Harris administration will result in a common-sense government that is slightly left of center, Marin progressives just gave them a sign of confidence.

Led by Inverness’ Norman Solomon, a few progressives are on the attack even before the new team is inaugurated. Along with RootsAction.org cohort Jeff Cohen, Solomon proclaims, “Too many of Biden’s cabinet nominees have deep industry ties and alarming track records. The predictable results would be nothing more than the status quo that landed us with President Trump in the first place.”

If both the far left and extreme right Trumpicans disparage them, it’s evidence Biden’s cabinet nominees present feet- onthe ground normalcy that America requires at this time of national crisis.
