Redwood gets sweep in first MCAL swim meet

The Redwood boys and girls swim teams swept San Rafael in their MCAL opener on Friday. The boys defeated the Bulldogs 10228 while the girls won 77-60.

“The San Rafael girls pushed us right till the end,” said Redwood head coach Fred Ferroggiar­o.

Redwood also took home the solo diving event for both boys and girls. Owen Peterson won on the boys side. Lina Ibraham won on the girls side.

The Tam girls won their first MCAL dual meet on Friday, besting Novato 109-76. Standout performanc­es belonged to Tam junior Lulu Johnson, winner of 200 freestyle, sophomore Alessia Root, winner of the 500 freestyle and second-place finished in the 100 fly, and junior Isabella Uhlhorn-Thornton, who won the 100 breaststro­ke and placed third in the 100 butterfly.

The Tam boys also won, 107-78.

The Tam divers also placed second through fifth.

Prep girls tennis

Marin Academy defeated host San Domenico 5-0 on Friday.

Women’s softball

Dominican opened its 2021 season on Friday in San Rafael with a doublehead­er shutout sweep of Academy of Art, 1-0 and 4-0.

In game 1, the Penguins (2-0) got their lone run off a solo home run from Peyton Mott in the second inning. That was enough support for starting pitcher Shelby Keltner, who went the full seven innings allowing just three hits with nine strikeouts and two walks.

In game 2, the Penguins scored early and often, plating single runs in each of the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th innings. Mott once again paced Dominican on offense, driving in runs with a double and a single in the 3rd and 5th innings, respective­ly. Lauren Lapinid drove in another run with a triple in the 1st.

Kathryn Caravalho picked up the win in the circle, going 4 2/3 innings allowing four hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Rosa Leguria went the final 2 1/3 innings with a strikeout to earn the save.

Dominican will face Academy of Art in another doublehead­er on Saturday at Mission Blue Field in Brisbane starting at noon.

Women’s basketball

Academy of Art rallied late to beat Dominican 7671 on Friday at Walter Gleason Gymnasium in Belmont.

The Penguins (1-5) held a 61-51 lead with just over eight minutes left in the fourth quarter before the Urban Knights (2-4) staged a 17-4 run to surge into the lead over the next four minutes. Dominican retook the lead at 73-71 but went cold down the stretch as Academy of Art went on to hit some crucial free throws down the stretch.

Riley Friauf led the way for Dominican with 21 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Julia Razo chipped in 18 points and 7 rebounds and Brittney Cedeno had 7 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists.

Men’s basketball

Dominican used a strong closing push to beat the Academy of Art 81-76 on Friday in Belmont.

The Penguins (3-5) and Urban Knights were tied at 62 with about 6:30 left in the second half but a 13-3 run by the Penguins over the following four minutes put them firmly in the driver’s seat.

Jalen Ragsdale scored a game-high 25 points and had 3 steals. Christophe­r Williams II chipped in 18 with 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
