Marin Briefs: Tiburon Mile is canceled again due to pandemic,

The RCB Tiburon Mile has been canceled for the second consecutiv­e year because of the coronaviru­s pandemic.

Event founder and director Robert C. Placak told the IJ via email on Saturday that he had made the decision to cancel the 18th edition of the event, originally scheduled for. Oct. 10.

The 1-mile open-water swim from Angel Island across the Raccoon Strait to Tiburon attracts many of the world’s top swimmers. Olympic gold medalists, world champions and record-holders have competed in the event in recent years.

Dutch swimmer Ferry Weertman, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist in the 10K open-water swim, won the previous Tiburon Mile in 2018 while American Ashley Twichell was the top female finisher. The event was not held in 2020, 2019, 2017 or 2014.

Prep swimming

Mia Solomon, Catherine Watrous, Emily Fee, Adeline Turner and diver Ruby Hauth picked up race wins for the Redwood girls in a 100-84 win against Terra Linda on Friday. Nicole Chong won both the 50 and 100 free for the Trojans.

The meet came down to the wire, decided by the final relay and the diving results.

• Gavin Green was a double winner for the Redwood boys in a 112-63 win against Terra Linda. Tor Aune, Harry Wait, Nick Scruton, Henry Harlow and diver Owen Peterson also had wins for the Giants. Calvin Cunnan had a pair of victories for TL.

Prep cross country

Calvin McCarthy finished first in 10 minutes, 15.30 seconds to lead the Drake boys to a 15-50 win against Novato on Saturday. Nate Wolford, Julian Durante, Jonah Grubbs and Diego Fino rounded out the top five for the Pirates.

• Alexandra Greenwald crossed the finish line first in 13:30.40 to lead the Drake girls, who picked up the win as Novato did not field a full team. Aleshka McPratel, Jane Adams, Phife MacGabhann and Paige Olson Brown rounded on the top five for Drake.

• Hudson Grace edged teammate Daegan Cutter on Friday to help the Redwood boys pick up a 15-50 win over San Marin. Grace finished in 16:53.50 with Cutter right behind him at 16:54.10. Nate Wollenwebe­r took third in 16:54.70.

• San Marin’s Selina Ruano finished first in 21:10.9 but Redwood picked up the win as the Mustangs did not field a full team. Trinity Chancellor paced the Giants, placing second with a time of 21:21.3.
