Many standouts as football makes its return

- By Ian Ross iross@marinij.com

Prep football made its triumphant return to Marin last week with a host of standout performances around the county.

Redwood’s late rally against Tam was the game of the week and could stand as the game of the season. The Giants were down their starting quarterback and had to rely on a sophomore backup to pull out the narrow victory.

Other games saw Terra Linda extend its win streak in the Bell Game to 18, Novato shut out Drake, and Marin Catholic blitzed past San Marin thanks to a monster game from its junior quarterback.

Brady Weingart, Redwood football

Weingart played the entire second half on Saturday for the Giants after starter Clayton Grace went down with an injury just before the break. Redwood’s 16-6 lead had turned into a 19-16 deficit but Weingart came good when it mattered most, throwing the game-winning touchdown to Sam Davis with just over a minute left. Weingart completed 10 of his 15 passes for 85 yards and the lone touchdown in the 22-19 win.

Gigi Clifford, Marin Catholic XC

Clifford continued her strong start to the season, finishing well in front of the pack as the Wildcats defeated Branson on Saturday. Clifford finished the 4,700-meter, on-campus course at MC in 16 minutes, 57.2 seconds — about 45 seconds faster than teammate Sam Wallenstrom in second.

Michael Ingrassia and John Krepps, Marin Catholic football

Ingrassia had one of the strongest games of his career, throwing for three touchdowns and a personalbest 374 yards on Saturday in a 35-0 win against San Marin. Krepps was Ingrassia’s favorite target, amassing seven catches for a career-high 155 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Chloe Swildens, Redwood field hockey

Swildens scored a goal in a 2-0 win against University on Wednesday then was one of five Giants to score in a season-ending 5-0 victory against Tam on Friday. Redwood went 8-0 this year to cap its second consecutive unbeaten run through the MCAL.

Jose Martinez, Novato football

The Hornets kicker made a pair of field goals to help Novato pick up a 13-0 win against Drake on Saturday but he saved his most spectacular play for last. Martinez had an interception late in the game to preserve the shutout. Martinez ran for about 80 yards on the return, almost scoring a touchdown in the process.
