Ferguson’s late HR sends Tam past Novato

Jake Ferguson hit a threerun home run in the top of the sixth to lead the Tam High baseball team to a 4-2 comeback win over Novato on Tuesday. Ferguson ended 2 for 4 on the day with three RBIs and a run scored. Tam starting pitcher Tucker Bougie (a Cal signee) allowed two hits and two unearned runs in 5.2 innings with eight strikeouts. Bougie got the win and Grant Selig the save after striking out all four batters he faced out of the bullpen to seal the victory.

• Van Larson turned in a dominant performanc­e on the mound on Tuesday, allowing just one hit and striking out 10 in 6.2 innings of work to help Marin Catholic to a 4-1 win over Drake. Larson, an Oregon

State signee, also went 1 for 2 at the plate with an RBI. The Wildcats did all their scoring in the middle innings, scoring solo runs in the third and fifth while plating two more in the fourth. Greg Schiff went 1 for 2 with an RBI triple and a run scored while Henry Farrell went 1 for 1 with an RBI and a run scored. Jonas Salk, a University of Portland signee, had the lone run and hit of the day for the Pirates. He singled in the first and then stole home on a double steal attempt in the seventh.

• Redwood took advantage of six Terra Linda errors to down the Trojans 10-1 on Tuesday. The Giants also got strong pitching out of Michael Bender, Kent Goodman and Tyler Blair, who combined to allow just two hits and two walks with 14 strikeouts. Cole McGowan, a UC Irvine commit, led Redwood at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored,

• Four Branson pitchers combined to limit San Rafael to just one hit in the Bulls’ 4-2 win over the Bulldogs on Tuesday. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the third but Branson answered with two of its own in the bottom of the inning before scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth to pull out the win. Branson managed only two hits of its own but was able to capitalize on six errors from San Rafael.

Prep softball

San Rafael scored five runs in the top of the fifth to defeat Drake 5-1 on Tuesday. Amanda Hogin led the way for the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Other offensive contributo­rs for the Bulldogs were Melissa McNair (2 for 3, run scored), Angel Amesa (1 for 2, double, RBI, run scored) and Kelsey McNair (1 for 1, RBI, run scored).

Megan Murphy got the win in the circle, allowing two hits and a run while striking out four in two innings of work. Melissa McNair pitched the following two innings with two strikeouts and Kelsey McNair closed the final inning with a pair of strikeouts.

Former San Rafael Pacifics Manager Michael Shapiro, the Pacific Associatio­n Executive of the Year in 2015, was named the new president of Pioneer Baseball

League on Tuesday.

The PBL, which has been around since 1939, was affiliated with Minor League Baseball until last year and consists of teams in Montana, Utah, Idaho and Colorado. The 2021 season will be its first as an independen­t MLB Partner League.

“I am honored to have been selected as the President of the Pioneer League,” said Shapiro in a release. “This is an exciting time for the league as it transition­s from an affiliated league into an MLB Partner League. I can’t imagine a more thrilling opportunit­y than to help further develop and grow the league into a unique vehicle for player developmen­t while continuing to serve its local communitie­s as a wonderful and affordable family entertainm­ent option.”

Shapiro was president and general manager of the Pacifics for seven seasons. Over that period, the Pacifics won four league titles. Shapiro has also worked with the Baltimore Orioles, Washington Nationals, San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves as well as with Turner Sports.

Girls golf

Marin Catholic’s Sofia Aldridge shot a 2-over 33 to lead the Wildcats to a win over Tam on Tuesday at McInnis Park. The Wildcats shot 151 as a team. Sophia Raymond was the low-scorer for the Hawks with a 45.

• Tam was forced to forfeit against Novato on Monday at Indian Valley due to a lack of players. The match was still held and Raymond led the Hawks with a 44 while Lola Spendov shot a 47.
