Ashley’s double helps Branson rally to beat San Rafael

Sophomore William Ashley hit a go-ahead two-run double as part of a four-run rally for the Branson School baseball team in the sixth inning as the Bulls came back to beat San Rafael 5-3 on Thursday.

Ashley went 2 for 3 with three RBIs on the day. His bases-loaded double in the sixth broke a 3-3 tie that the Bulls (2-0) had forced with a flurry of singles and a few walks to open the frame.

San Rafael (0-2) had scored once in the first and twice in the third before going scoreless for the final four innings. Ryan Scoles was 2 for 2 with a pair of runs scored for the Bulldogs while Max Shilstone was 1 for 2 with an RBI double.

Freshman Marcos Tolliver pitched 5.2 innings for San Rafael and struck out eight but also walked six and allowed four hits and three runs.

• Marin Catholic’s Carl Schmidt had three RBIs and was a home run away from hitting for the cycle on Thursday in a 7-1 win over Drake. The Oregon commit was 3 for 4 on the day. Greg Schiff was also 2 for 4 with an RBI, as was Kody Perry, who also hit a double. Starting pitcher Will Kroncke went 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored with a stolen base for MC (20). On the bump, Kroncke spun a gem, striking out seven and allowing two hits in five innings. Jonas Salk, a Portland signee, was 1 for 3 with an RBI for Drake (0-2).

Girls golf

Marin Catholic defeated Terra Linda 147-162 at McInnis Park on Thursday. Rose Malen paced the Wildcats with a 1-over par 32 and Sophia Aldridge shot a 34. For Terra Linda, Vivian Johnson shot a 35 and Piper Egan had a career-low 40.

Prep cross country

Marin Catholic’s Gigi Clifford and Sam Wallenstro­m finished 1-2 to help the Wildcats girls cross country team to a narrow 26-29 win over Tam on Wednesday at SF Bay Trail. The Tam boys, led by Tomo Scharber, had the top-three finishers and eight out of the top ten to beat MC 17-46.

Clifford ran the 3-mile race in 17 minutes, 35.37 seconds, more than 30 seconds ahead of Wallenstro­m. Brianna McInnis (18:33.68) was the top finisher for Tam.

Scharber, who finished in 15:21.07, crossed the line a step ahead of teammate Caden Carney (15:21.53). Ziggy Nacco was MC’s top boys finisher, crossing the finish line in 16:47.98, good for fourth overall.

Aces

• Judy Burns of Corte Madera hit a hole-in-one on Peacock Gap on Tuesday. She used a 7-Wood on hole No. 13 from 128 yards out.

• Matt Biggerstaf­f of San Francisco also hit an ace at Peacock Gap on Thursday. His was on hole No. 10 with a pitching wedge from 138 yards out.
