Marin Briefs: Terra Linda football tops Novato on late Hail Mary,

Drake gets first win

-

Facing a late fourth down, Terra Linda High football coach Dallas Hartwell opted to go for the win rather than hand the ball back to Novato.

Quarterback Tommy Hayes and receiver Jack Brody connected on a Hail Mary for the go-ahead touchdown with about 30 seconds left as the Trojans pulled out a 24-17 victory on Saturday.

TL (2-1) got an early touchdown run by Josiah Hernandez and held a 10-7 lead at the half. Novato (12) scored on a Jonaven Hill touchdown run late in the third quarter to take a 1410 lead.

TL responded with a oneyard scoring run by Hayes to move back in front, 1714. Novato got down to the TL 1-yard line on its ensuing drive but a false start penalty pushed the Hornets back and they settled for a tying field goal by Jose Martinez with about 2 minutes left.

Hartwell rolled the dice facing a fourth down on the Hornets’ 42-yard line in the final minute of the game. Brody came down with the football around the 2-yard line and was able to leap into the end zone for the winning touchdown.

Colton Baldwin and Nate Karpay-Brody ran for touchdowns and the defense did the rest as Drake picked up its first win of the season, 14-0, against San Rafael.

“It was important just for the morale of the team, especially losing the first two (games) in the way that we lost them,” first-year Drake coach Anthony Jackson said. “It felt like we could have played better. The players and coaches took ownership and came out and practiced really hard.”

Baldwin put the Pirates (1-2) on the board with a second-quarter touchdown then Karpray-Brody doubled the lead with a score in the third quarter.

Jack Raskowsky led the defensive effort for Drake with double-digit tackles against the Bulldogs (1-2). Jaylen Maffei and Finn Hummell intercepted passes for Drake.
