Happy to hear from encouraging supervisor
I would like to thank Marin Supervisor Stephanie MoultonPeters for using her recently published Marin Voice commentary to provide an invitation to all of us to get involved in the discussions regarding the Golden Gate Village public housing revitalization project in Marin City (“Supervisor details next steps for Golden Gate Village renovation,” Oct. 12).
As noted by Moulton-Peters, the vast numbers of speakers during the Board of Supervisors and Marin Housing Authority meetings represent most, if not all, of the communities of Marin County. The online participants in those meetings spoke unanimously in support of seeking out the opinions of the current Golden Gate Village residents and of giving serious consideration to the “deep green” revitalization plan proposed by the resident council.
As a predominantly Black community, Golden Gate Village is of unique importance to Marin County. Many of these families have generational roots dating back to the shipyards during World War
II. These forebears of the current residents faced many hurdles in trying to find housing in Marin.
Thanks to the advocacy by residents from all over the county (particularly the hard work of advocates from Marin City), there has been a shift in the policy of the Board of Supervisors and the Marin Housing Authority to prioritize active engagement with the Golden Gate Village community. This is a push toward the goal of bringing resident ideas and input into the heart of the planning process. This is a big step.
Of course, there are hurdles in any endeavor, but the bringing together of numerous minds working collectively brings hope and innovation. This will indeed be a beautiful project on many levels.
