Marjorie Anne “Marge” Summerville was born June 14, 1939 in Butte, MT to Timothy and Anne (Shovlin) Riley. The family moved first to Salt Lake City before settling in San Francisco in 1942. The City would be Marge’s home for the next 71 years as she graduated from Mercy High School (1957), Dominican College (B.A. 1961) and Stanford University (M.Ed. 1968). She pursued a career in education and development. In 1975 she married Ed Summerville, who was

the love of her life for the next 46 years. They welcomed their only child, son Peter, in 1979. Marge and Ed lived on 31st Avenue in the Parkside district until 2013, when they moved to The Tamalpais in Marin County.

Marge loved family vacations, traveling the world with Ed, hosting friends in Healdsburg, Lake Tahoe summers with the Jellies, gardening, baking and reading. Over the course of a 40 year career, Marge taught at SFUSD’s Lawton and John Muir Elementary Schools, was St. Gabriel School’s development director, and was a SFUSD substitute teacher and volunteer aide. At The Tamalpais, Marge was very active with “the White Elephant,” the Community Garden, and the Library Committee.

In addition to Ed and Peter, Marge is survived by sister Julia Rudden; niece Anne Press and nephew Jim Rudden and their families; her cousin Sheila Crowley and her family; as well as many other cousins.
