Novato girls golfer Briggs delivers in the postseason

- By Ian Ross iross@marinij.com

The fall playoffs officially kicked off last Monday when the MCAL girls golf tournament was held at Peacock Gap.

Novato standout Kiana Briggs entered that event as the favorite and backed that up by finishing with the low round.

The girls volleyball league playoffs also took place last week with both Wildcats teams — Marin Catholic and Marin Academy — claiming pennants.

The football playoffs are still three weeks away but Marin Catholic and San Marin met in the most anticipated MCAL game in years. The Wildcats were pushed to the wire but ultimately emerged victorious in large part due to a great all-purpose day despite the rain from their star quarterback.

KIANA BRIGGS, NOVATO GOLF >> The top golfer in the county came into the MCAL tournament at Peacock Gap with all of the expectations piled upon her. The UC Irvine commit lived up to her billing, shooting a 66 to take medalist honors and qualify as an individual for the North Coast Section Division II tournament. Briggs shot a 73 on Monday of this week, taking second at NCS D-II and qualifying for the Division I tournament next week. MICHAEL INGRASSIA, MARIN CATHOLIC FOOTBALL >> The gameoftheyearintheMCAL went down to the wire. On a

day where the weather made passing the ball a challenge, Ingrassia went 11 of 17 for 134 yards and two touchdowns — including the game winner to JR Bosch at the end of the third quarter of a 2114 victory. Perhaps more impressively, in a game that featured two of the best running backs in the MCAL, Ingrassia basically matched teammate Charles Williams and San Marin’s Justin Guin yard for yard. Ingrassia ran for 113 yards and one touchdown. Williams had 117 yards and Guin ran for 111 yards.

BROOKE BRILLIANT, MARIN

CATHOLIC VOLLEYBALL >> The sophomore middle blocker tied for team-high honors with 12 kills as the

Wildcats secured their fifth consecutive MCAL pennant by sweeping Branson in three sets on Friday night. Brilliant also had a teamhigh 12 kills in a semifinal victory against Archie Williams on Wednesday. SAMANTHA HAAN, REDWOOD FIELD HOCKEY >> Haan had a pair of big games this past week, scoring twice in 3-0 win against Lick-Wilmerding on Monday then putting together a five-assist night on Friday in a 6-0 victory against Archie Williams. Haan leads top-seeded Redwood into the MCAL playoffs this week. The Giants face Marin Catholic in the semifinals on Wednesday. The championship game is scheduled for Friday.

SAMAJE FEATHERSTONE, NOVATO FOOTBALL >> The Hornets picked up their first league win of the season on the legs of their star tailback. Featherstone carried the ball 21 times for 173 yards and he scored three of Novato’s first four touchdowns in a 38-13 win against Terra Linda on Saturday.

AMANDA JOHNSON, MARIN ACADEMY VOLLEYBALL >> Johnson had 16 digs in the Bay Counties League West semifinals against Urban to send the top-seeded Wildcats into the final. Johnson had another strong defensive game, piling up 18 digs to go along with five aces as MA won the title by defeating Convent.
