Three MCAL teams selected to play in Open Division playoffs

Three of the four MCAL finalists were drafted into the Open Division of the North Coast Section water polo brackets when seeding was announced on Sunday.

Fresh off winning a pennant, the Archie Williams High boys team was awarded the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. The Peregrine Falcons won’t play until Nov. 10 and await the winner of Thursday’s clash between No. 3 De La Salle and No. 6 San Ramon Valley.

Archie Williams played De La Salle in the regular season, pulling out a 17-14, double-overtime victory.

The Tam girls team also claimed a pennant on Saturday and was selected as the No. 5 seed in the Open. The Red-tailed Hawks travel to face No. 4 Acalanes at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The other MCAL girls finalist, Redwood, is the No. 6 seed in the Open and hits the road to face No. 3 Amador Valley at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Redwood and Tam both received byes in the Division I boys tournament — the Giants as the No. 2 seed and Tam as the No. 3 seed.

Five boys teams made the D-II bracket with No. 2 Marin Academy leading the way after receiving a first-round bye. Terra Linda is next at No. 6 and faces No. 11 Marin Catholic at De La Salle on Wednesday.

No. 7 San Rafael faces No. 10 Newark Memorial at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday at Novato High. That game will be immediatel­y followed by the No. 8 host Hornets facing No. 9 Clayton Valley Charter at 7:30 p.m.

No. 3 Archie Williams is the only girls team in the D-I bracket, receiving a first-round bye.

The D-II bracket is again loaded with MCAL teams — four in total. No. 1 Terra Linda and No. 4 Marin Catholic were awarded byes. No. 5 Marin Academy faces No. 12 St. Patrick-St. Vincent at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Amador Valley.

Finally, No. 11 San Rafael opens a triplehead­er at Novato at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, facing No. 6 Justin-Siena.

Girls tennis

The MCAL team final is tentativel­y scheduled to take place at 3:30 p.m. on Monday at Novato High but rain is expected. The final call on whether or not to play will be determined by noon. The match, between No. 2 Branson and No. 1 Redwood, is likely to be delayed until Tuesday.

The singles and doubles tournament­s are tentativel­y scheduled to take place between Wednesday and Friday at Novato High but weather could also impact those dates.

The top four seeds in singles are Branson’s Anna Lardner, TL’s En-Ya Zhang, Redwood’s Georgia Harms and Redwood’s Jordan Marotto, in that order.

Redwood also boasts the top two doubles seeds — No. 1 Annesley Kravitt/ Ella Povio and No. 2 Julia Laury/Pia Ong Bamola.

Girls volleyball

Elsa Snipes had 15 kills and six digs to lead Archie Williams into the D-III semifinals following an 1825, 25-16, 25-20, 25-14 win against Sonoma Valley on Saturday.

The No. 2 Peregrine Falcons host No. 3 Miramonte on Wednesday. Ella Heimbrodt had seven kills, seven digs and four aces.

Olivia Dow had 18 assists, five kills, four aces and three digs. Libero Phoebe Galland had 26 digs and a pair of aces.

• Tenley Brovelli and Mary Healy capped big seasons with standout performanc­es as San Rafael bowed out of the NCS D-IV playoffs following a 2519, 22-25, 25-17, 25-12 loss against Justin-Siena. Brovelli had 31 assists while Healy had 16 kills and eight aces. Jade Von Doepp had 14 kills and Briana Muschi had 12 digs.

• Top-seeded Branson swept past No. 8 Novato, 25-7, 25-8, 25-11 in a D-III semifinal on Saturday night. The Bulls advance to host No. 4 Tam — 3-1 winners against No. 5 Terra Linda — at College of Marin on Wednesday.
