San Marin football rolls into NCS Division V semis

Andy Garcia got the San Marin High football team off to an ideal start, scoring the game’s first two touchdowns on Friday night.

The top-seeded Mustangs rolled to a huge halftime lead, activated the running clock and cruised to a 42-6 road victory in the North Coast Section Division V quarterfin­als against No. 8 Hercules.

The Titans hosted the game as a result of winning their division. San Marin returns home next Friday to host No. 4 St. Bernard’s, which defeated No. 5 De Anza 14-7 on Saturday afternoon.

Garcia’s first touchdown from quarterbac­k Joey Cook gave San Marin (101) a 7-0 lead. The Mustangs added a safety before Cook and Garcia connected again for a second score.

Harry Hughes returned an intercepti­on for a touchdown and the Mustangs were off and running, literally. Tailback Justin Guin scored the next three San Marin touchdowns and the game was over at halftime.

• Marin’s other D-V team, No. 7 Archie Williams, was eliminated by No. 2 Del Norte, 49-6, in Crescent City on Friday night. The loss ended the most successful season that Drake/ Archie Williams (7-4) has put together in at least two decades.

• Top-seeded St. Vincent de Paul (9-1) of Petaluma shut down No. 8 St. Patrick-St. Vincent, 57-0, in Saturday’s North Coast Section Division VII firstround playoff action. The Mustangs will host No. 4 Clear Lake on Saturday at 1 p.m. Junior running back Mac Cauz, a Marin resident, rattled off a 64-yard touchdown run in the first half. He also tallied five tackles against the Bruins (4-8). Another Marin resident, senior Killian Collins, had two tackles and a blocked pass for the Mustangs.

Girls volleyball

Kaley Mathews had 36 assists and nine digs as Redwood advance to the NorCal D-II title game following a 25-18, 25-19, 25-14 home victory against Burlingame on Saturday.

Katelyn McKnew had a team-high 12 digs for the Giants (28-6), who face topseeded Clovis on Tuesday. Jaden Hendrickso­n had a team-high 10 kills and added eight digs. Emma McDermott and Brooke Leslie had eight kills apiece. Annabelle Ure had nine digs.

Boys water polo

Max Matthews scored four goals and Preston Paige added three to lift Redwood to its first NCS D-I championsh­ip in coach Rudy Kardos’ tenure following a 10-7 win against Acalanes on Saturday,

Redwood (23-6) never trailed but the game was close throughout. The Giants led 5-4 at the half and outscored Acalanes by a goal in both the third and fourth periods.

Travis Hughes had the other two goals for Redwood, which advances to the NorCal playoffs as a result of Saturday’s win. Goalie Charlie Mills had eight saves.

• Connor Dickinson paced Marin Academy with three goals as the Wildcats (15-6) fell in the NCS D-II title game, 15-7 against topseeded Northgate on Saturday.

Girls water polo

Bella Kiriakis, Claire Cassidy and Thea Falvey all scored two goals apiece as Marin Catholic fell in the NCS D-II title game, an 8-7 loss against No. 2 Carondelet on Saturday.

Hannah Slaught also scored for the No. 4 Wildcats (13-11). Goalie Noelle Antongiova­nni had around 14-15 blocks, according to coach Sophie Waldron.

Women’s volleyball

College of Marin capped an historic regular season with a 3-0 win over Los Medanos, securing a berth in the California Community College Athletic Associatio­n playoffs for the first time in program history.

Former Terra Linda High standout Rachel Reher led the way for the Mariners (18-9) with 17 kills and 18 digs. Aliyah Afoa had 11 kills and 14 digs. Riley Geary had 18 assists and 14 digs and Karissa Moya added 14 assists.

Men’s basketball

New Dominican University head coach Justin Argenal began his tenure with a 70-56 win against Sonoma State at the PacWest/CCAA Challenge in San Francisco on Saturday.

The Penguins (1-0) trailed at the half before outscoring the Seawolves 43-25 the rest of the way.

Adam Parker scored a team-high 18 points for Dominican while Anthony Dennis scored 13 points and added two assists Freshman Jorden Josephs posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Women’s basketball

Dominican’s Riley Friauf scored a game-high 32 points but the Penguins’ furious comeback was foiled as Chico State’s Halsey Ison hit a buzzer beater to give the Wildcats a 79-77 victory at the CCAA/PacWest Challenge in Chico on Saturday.

Friauf shot 60% for the game and pulled down seven rebounds. Jordan Charlton added 12 points and five rebounds. Alessandra Salise also scored 12 points.

The Penguins trailed by seven with about 3 minutes left to play but tied the game at 77-77 when freshman point guard Alaiyah San Juan banked in a 3-pointer with 2.4 seconds left.

Women’s soccer

Cassidy Marquez scored a golden goal penalty kick in extra time to lift Dominican to a 1-0 road win against Holy Names in the team’s season finale.

Ace

San Rafael’s John Shaw had a hole-in-one on the 11th hole at Meadow Club on Saturday. Shaw used an 11 Wood from 152 yards out.
