Put our money where water is abundant

- — John Baseheart, Novato

I think the possibility of building a desalination plant on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay could be the answer to our water shortage.

Recently, I read that a developer of a large tourism project on the west coast of Saudi Arabia plans to build the country’s first desalination plant powered by clean energy. If we put a desalination plant on Alcatraz the energy from ocean waves coming through the Golden Gate could turn on the faucet to produce enough fresh water to quench the thirst for the entire Bay Area and beyond without taxing our electrical grid.

Since the Earth is getting warmer, sea levels are rising and we’re at the mercy of Mother Nature, what better location for a desal plant than on Alcatraz? Of course the expense of pipelines and tankers would be tremendously expensive, but maybe funding from Bay Area billionaires and the state’s taxdollar resources could make it happen. What other options do we have?

No rain in the future equates to no agriculture, no beef, no reservoirs and no showers. We need to put the money where the water is abundant.

In addition, architects, artists and designers could have a field day designing a beautiful artistic structure on Alcatraz that could be a monolith or landmark for the ages like the pyramids, the Great Sphinx of Giza, the Statue of Liberty or Stonehenge.

No crystal ball can predict the next rain, but we can predict the drought is here to stay. Understandably a desal plant on Alcatraz would be a massive endeavor, but it’s also a massive and absolute necessity.
