Mt. Tam Quilt Guild presents valor quilts to military veteran backers

-

Five members of the

Mt. Tam Quilt Guild met with Barbara Bochner, president, and Barb Travis, founder of Blue Star Moms Novato chapter, and Cynthia Gray, senior social worker of HUD, Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing, to present two Quilts of Valor made by guild members to honor Marin veterans and their families on Nov. 10.

Guild members learned how Blue Star Moms’ mission to support troops, their families and veterans in challenging circumstances has brought them into partnership with a social worker at Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing, who provides case management services to homeless veterans in Marin County to assist them in securing permanent, stable housing.

Making valor quilts provides an outlet for guild members to share their talents and skills with community members who would benefit from those gifts. Making the quilts was a labor of love for the project participants: two guild members designed the quilts, 16 members made blocks for the quilts, two members assembled the blocks and another provided quilting services to bind the layers of the quilt together. Matching pillow cases were also made to accompany the quilts.

Mt. Tam Quilt Guild leaders say making of Quilts of Valor is a metaphor for the process by which Marin nonprofits and volunteers blend their efforts to provide services to community members in Marin.

Mt. Tam Quilt Guild meets the second Tuesday of each month, and new members are always welcome. For more information about the guild’s meetings and activities, visit the guild’s website at MTQG.org.
