Winters leads Marin Catholic to win in season opener

-

Kyle Winters made a pair of clutch free throws late for his 32nd and 33rd points as the Marin Catholic High boys basketball team pulled out a 7270 victory in the season opener against Healdsburg on Saturday.

The Wildcats (1-0) held an 11-point lead at the half but Healdsburg rallied to take a four-point lead with about 3 minutes left to play. Dylan Ryssemus hit a huge three-pointer late in the game and Declan Ochoa made some of his game-high seven steals down the stretch.

Noah Deitch added 13 points for MC while D.J. White scored 10.

• Jack Healy had a strong game with 15 points, nine rebounds and three steals as San Rafael dropped its season opener, 42-37, against Albany on Saturday. Max Hattenbach also had nine points for the Bulldogs (0-1).

Three Redwood wrestlers finished in the top three in their first action of the season at the annual Redwood Rumble on Saturday. Giants senior Jean Edward Cerpas (170) and juniors Niko Sellers (120) and Jose Ordonez (126) all placed third in their classes. Juniors Nate Olsan (113) and Josh Littleton (132) both placed fourth. Junior Evan Daley (220), who is ranked 37th in the state, took fifth.

Ukiah claimed the team title ahead of second-place Benicia. The Giants finished fourth in the team standings, just 9.5 points behind third-place finisher McQueen.

With the passing of Redwood coach Chris Feder, the event was scaled down to 16 teams instead of the traditional 32-team field, “while we try to carry his torch and want to get it right without him. (Feder) being gone is a huge loss to our program,” Redwood coach Lochlan McHale said.
