Tam girls soccer surges past Marin Academy

The Tam High girls soccer team scored three times in the second half to pull away for a 4-1 victory against Marin Academy on Thursday.

The game was a matchup between two of the perenniall­y strongest programs in the county. Ari Greenberg scored off a pass from Maren Jones in the 26th minute to stake Tam (2-0-1) to a 1-0 lead going into the half. Stella Espinasse set up freshman Sybina Szyiko to make it 2-0 in the 46th minute. Jones made it 3-0 scoring from about 20 yards out on an assist by Hailey Moll.

Sydney Boyd capped the scoring for Tam by drawing a penalty kick late and converting it for 4-0. MA added a late goal, scored by Jordan Potter and assisted by Elodie Mortimer.

• Redwood pushed its goal tally this week to 12 in two games following a 4-2 victory against Bishop O’Dowd on Thursday. Bri Salvetti and Mia Curtaz both scored a goel and provided an assist for the Giants (2-00). Salvetti put the Giants on the board, assisted by Curtaz. Sydney Nichol scored an unassisted goal for the second. Avery Jones netted the third, assisted by Salvetti. Curtaz capped the scoring with a penalty kick.

• Ally Hsieh’s score in the ninth minute stood as the winning goal in Branson’s 6-0 win over Rancho Cotate on Thursday. Hsieh finished with two goals and an assist.

Anna Lardner made the score 2-0 in the 11th minute for a 2-0 lead. Hsieh scored her second goal and Birdie Dillon got on the board as the Bulls built a 4-0 lead in the first half. Riley Pearson, who assisted on Hsieh’s first goal, scored with an assist from Caitlin Caitolo in the 44th minute for a 5-0 lead. Hsieh assisted on Audrey Spalls goal in the 57th minute to finish the scoring.

Caroline Deleon and Lena Sugrue also had assists for the Bulls (1-1), who are scheduled to play at San Rafael on Saturday.

Boys basketball

San Rafael’s last-second shot wouldn’t fall as the Bulldogs fell, 44-41, to West County in Thursday’s opener of the Hornet Invitation­al at Novato High. Jack Healy scored a team-high 14 points for the 0-3 Bulldogs, who play Friday at 3:30 p.m. against either Balboa or St. Patrick-St. Vincent of Vallejo.

• After struggling through a winless COVID season in the spring, San Domenico’s boys basketball team debuted with a 63-31 victory over host Galileo to start the 2021-22 season on Wednesday.

Freshman Gavin Early led the Panthers with 26 points and 13 rebounds and Jimmy Hoagland grabbed 18 rebounds. Drew Morehouse came through with 13 rebounds as the same starting five played the entire game for San Domenico.

The Panthers are scheduled to face host Archie Williams in the Falcons Tournament on Thursday, Dec. 9.

Men’s basketball

Sophomore guard Adam Parker was unstoppabl­e for Dominican on Wednesday night as he led the team to a 78-48 victory over the Pacific Union Pioneers for the second night in a row, this time on the road.

Parker finished with a career-high 31 points to go with eight rebounds, and six assists for the Penguins (3-4). Graduate center Justin Brown added 11 points, with graduate guard Zamaria Odom grabbing 14 boards.

The Penguins will travel down to Belmont where they will begin conference play as they face Academy of Art on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Women’s basketball

Jayden Davis scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but College of Marin could not match Santa Rosa in a 69-29 loss on Wednesday night. The Bear Cubs outscored the Mariners, 24-2, in the third period to seal the win.

The Mariners (1-7) are scheduled to host San Mateo on Friday at 5 p.m.

Men’s water polo

Holden Neach’s goal with 41 seconds remaining in the first overtime period gave No. 7 UC Davis the lead and the defense held off No. 5 Long Beach State the rest of the way, as the Aggies earned a 9-8 overtime win over No. 5 Long Beach State in the quarterfin­als of the NCAA National Collegiate Men’s Water Polo Championsh­ip on Wednesday afternoon at UCLA’s Spieker Aquatics Center in Los Angeles.

Former Drake (now Archie Williams) player Logan Anderson scored for the Aggies, as did Spencer Towill, Aleix Aznar Beltran (who also added three assists) and Levi Murtaugh. Senior Nir Gross led the way with four goals and six points.

The win improved the Aggies to 19-8 overall and advanced them to face No. 1 USC in the semifinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. It marked UC Davis’ first win in the NCAA Tournament since 1996 and is only the second win over The Beach in the last 18 meetings between the two programs dating back to 2005, snapping a 12-match losing streak in the process.

College volleyball

Terra Linda High grad Shannon Ngo pounded home 11 kills in her career finale with Bentley University, as the Falcons fell to Daeman College in the first round of the NCAA Division II East Regional on Thursday. Bentley took Daemon to the limit in the 25-17, 21-25, 18-25, 2522, 15-10 loss. Bentley finishes its season at 15-13.

Following the match, Ngo commented “I’m very proud of this team. We left it all on the court today.”

Ngo finished the season with 193 kills, 57 digs and 237.5 points in 27 matches.

Running

Registrati­on is now open for the Jingle Bells 5K Race to be held on Sunday morning, Dec. 12, along the scenic Sausalito waterfront.

The race, which benefits the Dipsea Race Foundation’s Dipsea Kidz program and Sausalito-on-the-Waterfront’s Child Education and Activity Fund program, starts at 8:30 a.m. on Spinnaker Drive and will be followed at approximat­ely 9:30 a.m by a pancake brunch in the Spinnaker Restaurant hosted by the Sausalito Lions Club.
