Anthony (Tony) Compagno

-

July 7, 1932 - April 5, 2022

Tony Compagno, devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, peacefully passed on April 5, 2022 at home surrounded by his wife Beverly and children. He was born to Salvatore and Caterina Compagno in Martinez, CA on July 7, 1932. He is reunited with his parents and sisters, Joan and Marie, whom predeceased him. Tony grew up in Martinez attending St. Catherine’s Grammar School and Alhambra High School. Upon graduation from high school, he attended Diablo Valley College for one year and then enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served four years and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Tony then attended San Francisco State University and University of San Francisco where he received both his teaching and counseling credentials. In 1957 he met the "love of his life" Beverly Piro. They married August 1, 1959 spending 62 years together raising five children, Steve, Mary, Kathleen, Susan (Bob) and Laurice (Matt). Tony has eight

grandchildren: Steve Jr., Gina, Joe, Matthew, Anna, Bryce, Nolan and Benjamin.

Tony and Beverly moved to Marin County in 1959 settling in Larkspur where they have lived for 55 years. Tony’s first teaching job was at James Lick Junior High School in San Francisco and then hired at Redwood High School in Larkspur working as a teacher, counselor, administrator and coach until his retirement in 1992. He touched many lives during his tenure at Redwood and was a legend amongst his students and peers. Tony also taught Math and English at San Quentin, served in the Air Force Reserves, taught driver’s training in the summers and had his General Contractor’s License. He also worked at Jackson’s Hardware in San Rafael for 10 years after his retirement from Redwood and was a substitute teacher at El Cerrito High School.

Tony was very proud of his Larkspur home where he completed the interior finish work himself. If he was not building something for his home, working on a remodel for someone else, he could be found in the Woodshop at Redwood making a desk for one of his children or a wagon, scooter or personalized chair for one of his grandchildren. Tony was a true artist with wood and the tools he put in his hands.

Tony loved his family, especially his devoted wife Beverly. He also had a special relationship with his friend and caregiver, Simi Tuitubou, who was a true gift to Tony and the entire family. He loved his children, always present in their lives. He loved his grandchildren and attended as many of their games and events as possible. Tony will be deeply missed. He made his community a better place, set a great example for his family and touched many lives in a positive way over the years.

The family requests any charitable donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans or the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Larkspur.
