Top four seeds advance in MCAL tennis tournament

The top four seeds all held true as the MCAL boys tennis singles tournament kicked off at College of Marin on Monday.

Marin Catholic's Nickawn Namdar, the No. 1 seed, cruised to victory and heads into Tuesday's semifinals with a match against No. 4 seed Liam Carpenter of Redwood.

Second-seeded Jake Magnusson of Archie Williams faces No. 3 Carson Harrell of Tam in the other semifinal. Harrell played in the most competitiv­e match of the day, securing a 3-6, 7-6, 10-6 victory against Branson's Luke Tuscher in the quarterfin­als.

The doubles teams will move into the quarterfin­als at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The top four seeds all received byes through Monday's first round.

Boys golf

Marin Academy's Oliver Vilkin shot an 84 to finish with the third-best score at the Bay Area Conference tournament at par-72 Harding Park in San Francisco on Monday. MA finished second as a team, shooting a 377. University won the tournament with a 344.

Charlie Hansen shot an 88 for the Wildcats, who plan to apply for an at-large bid to the North Coast Section Division II Championsh­ip which is for next Monday at Valley of the Moon Club in Santa Rosa.

Prep softball

Sadie Leonard struck out 13 hitters in seven innings of work as Redwood secured a 3-1 win against Archie Williams on Monday. The Giants (18-4, 12-1 MCAL) secured the No. 1 seed in next week's MCAL playoffs with the victory. No. 2 Marin Catholic and No. 3 San Rafael will meet in the other semifinal.

Lily Elizondo, Katie Connors, Maddie Sofnas, Leonard and Maizy Crawford had hits for the Giants.

• Sammy Horn had four hits to lead Marin Catholic to an 11-1 victory against Terra Linda. Horn drove in a pair of runs and stole one base. Rose Malen went 3 for 3 with a pair of RBIs. Selena Pena and Savannah Schreck limited TL to two hits over five innings of work.

• Kacea Stetler had four hits to help Tam ride two big innings to a 13-0 win against Novato. The Redtailed Hawks scored five in the third and six in the sixth to blow the game open. Lauren Cummings, Carly Waldeck and Simone George had two hits apiece for Tam. Eloise Weir drove in three runs. Pitcher Eden Clark struck out seven and allowed three hits in six innings of work.

Mountain biking

Tam's Marcis Shelton won the boys varsity race at the Six Sigma Showdown on Saturday, completing the course in 1 hour, 51 minutes, and 6.58 seconds. Marin Academy's Griffin Hoppin took third with a time of 1:51:54.52.

Marin riders took three of the top five positions in the varsity girls race. Redwood's Vaila Heinemann took second place with a time of 1:34:19.67. San Domenico's Hayley Ballard placed third in 1:34:25.78 while Tam's Mia Schumann was fifth (1:51:11.89).

Other Marin winners were Tam's Noah Shelton (JV boys D1), Marin Catholic's Izzy Landry (JV girls), Redwood's Charlotte Philkill (freshman girls), and Archie Williams' Tyler Wolin (sophomore boys D1).

Hoppin was victorious in the overall series for the varsity boys. Other series winners were Redwood's Matthew Marotto (JV boys D1), Philkill, and Branson's Carlos Hernandez (sophomore boys D1).

Amateur Golf

Novato's Kianna Briggs, a two-time MCAL champion, placed 16th in the Junior Tour of Northern California Spring Series VI at Coyote Creek Golf Club over the weekend. She finished with a 17-over par 161, 11 strokes behind the Girls Championsh­ip division winner.

Briggs had a rough first day on the course, with a 16-over 88, but recovered Sunday to record the best round in the field for the day with a 1-over 73. Only one other player, secondplac­e Nicole Iniakov of Prunedale, matched Briggs' single-day score during the weekend.

In the boys' First Flight Championsh­ip, Novato's Mason Sylvester tied for 10th with a 20-over 164, just seven strokes off the pace set by winner Maximus Choi of San Jose.
