Giants ready for title showdown

Redwood field hockey team blanks rival MC

The excitement is building with just one week left before undefeated league leaders Redwood and University meet in the MCAL field hockey regular season finale to decide the top seed in the playoffs.

The Giants (9-0-3) kept their slim edge over University (8-0-4) with Friday's 2-0 victory over powerhouse rival Marin Catholic (8-2-3) in Kentfield.

Redwood's leaders continue to shoulder the load, with Sammy Haan and Maia Lewis scoring for the Giants. Haan and Bella Wagner each had an assist.

The Giants are scheduled to host Archie Williams on Monday.

Girls tennis

Novato secured a 5-2 victory with two narrow match wins that tilted the court in the Hornets' favor against San Rafael on Thursday. The Hornets' Antica Chang held off the

Bulldogs' Mackenzie Benson, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (4), at No. 3 singles.

Novato's Payton Grafeld and Alexis Partrite helped wrap things up for the Hornets with a 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (4) win over Maylee McCulley and Kate Urban at No. 1 singles.

San Rafael's Emely DeLeon and Katherine Garcia held on for a 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (5) win over Natalie Henderson and Myla Villalobos at No. 3 doubles.

• Branson played a soled match to defeat host Tam, 5-2, on Thursday. The Bulls' Mirabel Arlender, Audrey Gilmor and Katie Warrun posted singles wins.

Tam's Gabriella Klonowski earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles.

• Redwood's Annesley KRawitt won a 3-6, 6-3, 10-2 rally against Marin Catholic's Kate Block at No. 2 singles as the Giants went on to a 7-0 victory Thursday.

The Giants' Charlotte Estes and Layla Bahmani survived 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 challenge from Georgia Compagno and Heidi Koch at No. 2 doubles to maintain the sweep.
